SWINDON TOWN: Bostock back as a permanent fixture?
5:30am Saturday 14th July 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
BACK FOR GOOD?: John Bostock
JOHN Bostock could be available on a permanent deal during the close-season, according to Swindon Town’s interim chairman Jeremy Wray.
The Tottenham midfielder, who impressed during a six-week loan spell with the Robins towards the back end of last term, remains one of Town boss Paolo Di Canio’s main transfer targets as he builds a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League One.
Originally it appeared as though Swindon would be looking to bring Bostock to Wiltshire on a long-term temporary deal this summer, but Wray has now hinted that purchasing the 20-year-old may well be an option.
“His is a slightly different situation – whether he comes out on loan, whether he’s now available on a permanent point of view,” he told the Advertiser.
“I think that (a permanent move) is a possibility as one of the ways around it. We’ll look at that and what that entails and it’s still very much in the mix.”
However, Wray stressed that Town would not be rushing through any negotiations in the next few days.
On Wednesday he revealed that Swindon are happy to play the waiting game in the transfer market, with Di Canio keen to hold off for another fortnight before committing to any further spending.
And Wray emphasised that the club would employ the same tactics in the case of Bostock.
“He offers something slightly different and I don’t think the situation is any different,” he said.
“I think Paolo just wants a bit more time to assess overall where he specifically needs people.
“I know that John Bostock is high on his list that he’s keen on but we’ll just give him a couple of days from when we get back and assess him then.”
Meanwhile, Town fly back from their pre-season tour of Italy today. The squad were set to depart Verona airport just before midday, and were due to arrive at London Gatwick at lunchtime.

What a Pre-season this is, to possibly get Bostock in on a permanent deal would be the icing on the cake. I like the way it is going at the moment and it seems there is a god team spirit in the camp, fortunately John knows most of the team so settling in will not take too long.
M&S shares will be going up soon with the amount of socks that I keep losing by being BLOWN OFF.
Absolutely loving the Board and PDC bringing the good times back to our fantastic club. Can't wait for the season to start, bets are going on.

Whilst most of us rate him, you need to remember he has been moved from pillar to post out on loan and certainly at Wednesday played in a variety of positions.
Extremely optimistic about the season. Superb stuff.

No so Smart Roger try and be optimistic. I've long since thought we'd get him permanently if not now then in January a la Sir Wes as he's only a year left on his contract.

Kewell on the other hand seems an odd one. Doesn't fit with ethos of the squad even when you consider some of the experience that has been added recently.
Also everytime his name is mentioned I get flashbacks to Ruddock and the dark days!!!

Presumably he wouldn't be cheap either when you consider wages and that Holmes was rumoured to get £100k signing on fee. I think that money would be better invested in Wes, Rooney or Flint type players.

Forget Kewell, he just doesn't fit in the jig saw, and year on year, has probably never been as fit as PDC was.
Some of the £2M has already been spent, but I dare say we could buy Bostock as long as we accept the inevitable sell-on clause that he will attract.

Me too Wiz. I dont feel there is anything in this one - news reporters report of what other news reporters say. Lazy journalism at its worst IMO. We certainly would not want Kewell and Bostock and Bostock is the outstanding possibility for me. The trouble is..... now its out in the open ref. permanent deal there will be other clubs interested and I feel the chances of getting him are now much diminished. I am not a betting man but I would put the sale odds on Bostock coming on a permanent deal to stfc winning League 1. ie double digits against.
Just been told we are on flood warning, again, so sand bags it is.

PdC said if a player is fit enough and has the hunger and desire it doesn't matter how old they are - as you can't buy experience
.
Kewell is certainly experienced!
.
If it is just rumours so be it as our squad is pretty good as it is
.
If it is true great - a Champions League winner playing for Swindon
.
Bostock on a perm would be great - I always thought Jan would be when we signed him but will take August

With the greatest respect to Kewell, the only reason he is here is because of illness in the family. At some point that may become a strong distraction to how he performs, and of course no doubting his professionalism, these things tend to take over peoples lives, because they care about the one who is ill. All that pressure plus the pressure here, the club expecting him to perform at his highest level. Somehow it will result in tears, very regrettable for both sides.
I hope his family ills are resolved for the better, and he finds a berth in a club that can cut him some slack when needed, but I can't see that happening here with the clear mandate Wray has given PDC, that would be unfair on all parties concerned. There is more to this situation than just football, sadly.

Hmm, can't see how Kewell would fit in, already having Matt Richie he'd be looked at playing the second striker role, which would go to Bostock in all likelihood if he's signed. Can't see a place for HK. Wages may also be relatively high for a player that may not feature much as well.
.
Just give it some thought.... Yes they will both play the same role, but one is the 'old master' and the other the 'young apprentice'.....
.
Bostock would learn so much from HK, and I would imagine that Harry would only want a short term deal, as he is only back due to family illness...
.
Rotating these twocould be a masterstroke, and if we were a couple of goals behindin a game, then bring 'em both on to give it a real go?.....
.
Paolo thinks outside the box at times, and sees the long term benefits also....
.
Don't write this story off, because I believe that both is a very strong possibilty, and it would certainly encourage Botock to make the move permanent.
.
Kewell playing in league 1 would be a masterstroke by Paolo...

One thing is for sure though, if he does sign, Paolo will have deemed his attitude and fitness to be of the required level and we all know that class is permanent.

Wayne Allison left us as his mother was ill and he wanted to be closer to home - that didn't mean Udders got a half hearted player!
.
If Kewell sees his life after football is in OZ for good so what!
.
He could easily sign on a one year deal (like Miller) and then either retire or return to the A League
.
There should be no issue with that
.
People are saying he won't be able to cope with his personal issues - let's remember it's his mother in law - so it won't be as hard on him as his own parents
.
We should all know first hand how people can carry on through that considering our manager lost both of his own - yet was as professional as they come!
.
Didn't take you long to get your Ritchie drum out again then Mallorca!
.
Why are the board pumping £2m if Ritchie is being used to finance a move for Kewell or any others?
.
Surely that is instead of having to sell him, Caddis or Wes!

Now that just depends on the lady in question, and how is wife is surely, and that WILL have an effect on his performance. I thought you of all people were a bit more "PC" on that front. Yeh, yeh, yeh, go on, rub it in. Its hardly stopped all day, and I actually put the heating on this morning as everything was beginning to get that damp odour about it. A quick blast and now back to normal. Like a dirty spring day.
I have seen here and there on the more reputable sites that Austin may be going to 'uddersfield. Then again the ink aint on the paper just yet. I also think Wray will be careful as he is still paying the cost of letting his boy have a handful of sweets out of every jar in the shop last summer, hence the £2M. An informed whisper told me, a lot of one half of that has already been accounted for, hence the summit meeting etc.
More intrestingly is the £4M budget for this season, now how that is being split up nobody knows as yet but I dare say some here will want to put their slant to it, and why not.
That cool in my Utility tonight, I don't even have to cool the beer, lol !!!

Season tickets are available end of July beginning of August folks and they said they are a little late this season but it is very important to keep your cards from last season as your new season ticket is in fact just a new booklet and you put last seasons plastic card in it. The card is the important bit and will be loaded for the new season so lets hope everyone has kept theirs.

Rumours in East Anglia that Norwich are in for Flint. Let's face it the big fish lower down the pond ( swindon, bournemouth etc) have done thier feeding, now it's time for the even bigger fish to feed up. We have had all the good news in the early part of the close season, we should now be prepared for the attacks from above.

The question around Kewells motives is interesting. If accept if he is fit. I accept if he has class. I accept if he wants to play football in the UK and he has inner drive and determination. Paolo of course ants more. Once the season starts basically he wants a player to play football and shut out everything else in their lives. Little free time and total focus on the goal of promotion. This is the unanswered question for me - would Kewell want to shut out the reason he is in the UK. Maybe he can maybe he cant. There lies the judgement.
I would prefer to see cover at the back, an older experienced player at the back.

That is why we missed out on Parkin, Fallon and Jukebox
.
Reading made a massive amount off Cox as we made around 1.4m on the initial fee - so their 40% was about 600k
.
If we sold him for the rumoured 1.6m that is only 400k profit at 2m
.
So 20% is only 80k or 25% is 100k
.
Would Burnley even sell for say 300k profit after our sell-on?
.
We would need him to be sold for 3m plus to really get anything from a sell-on (300-375k)

Quite amusing how all of a sudden a player of the quality and stature of Harry Kewell isn't good enough for some of us! Some people, dear oh dear...
There doesn't appear to be too much coming out of the club on this one, so who knows...
One thing is for sure though, if he does sign, Paolo will have deemed his attitude and fitness to be of the required level and we all know that class is permanent.
How come you get to come on here and slag anyone off for their honest opinions??
You dont have to agree with everyone on here...but coming on here and be-littling them by saying 'Oh dear, oh dear' does you no favours buddy.
I honestly think if he's that much quality why did his contract not get re-newed...and why hasn't he been snapped up by Leeds, Middlesborough, or another southern based Championship Club??
All i'm saying is that the guy's a nice guy....going through some personal stuff...come over here....needs to earn a crust....but i dont think PDC will give anyone an easy ride....
HK....getting beasted....i dont think so, thats all i'm saying....
Louis
Does that mean he likes to be tackled from behind?

M&S shares will be going up soon with the amount of socks that I keep losing by being BLOWN OFF.
Absolutely loving the Board and PDC bringing the good times back to our fantastic club. Can't wait for the season to start, bets are going on.
