OLYMPICS: European bronze for Talbot
DANNY Talbot tonight claimed bronze in the men's 200m at the European Championships in Helsinki - but will have to wait to see if the performance is enough to earn him a place at the Olympic Games.
The Trowbridge sprinter, 21, claimed Britain's fifth medal of the championships as he crossed the line behind the Dutch pair of Churandy Martina and Patrick van Luijk.
In wet conditions, Talbot's time of 20.95 seconds was 0.4secs outside of the Olympic A standard required, leaving the Wiltshire sprinter at the mercy of the Great Britain selectors, who finalise the London 2012 team next week.
But Talbot gave himself a chance of the third discretionary 200m place behind James Ellington and Christian Malcolm by finishing ahead of teammate Chris Clarke, who was sixth.
"It's amazing," said Talbot.
"I didn't even get a medal in the UK championships so to come here and get a medal is a great feeling.
"It's my first senior championships so I was just looking to make the final."
He added: "I am so pleased that I got medal for GB. The performance justified the positions.''
On his Olympic chances, Talbot said: "Even if I was only selected for the relay it would be a massive honour."
