SWINDON TOWN: Miller wants to be Town's penalty man

Miller wants to be Town's penalty man Miller wants to be Town's penalty man

NEW signing Tommy Miller is keen to put himself on the spot and continue his exceptional penalty record following his move to Swindon.

The 33-year-old moved to the County Ground from Huddersfield last week, and brought with him a record of having successfully converted 33 out his 34 career penalties.

Miller found the net with his first 29 attempts during his spells with Hartlepool, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday, before missing the only normal-time penalty of his career for Wednesday at home to Charlton in January last year.

The midfielder got back on his horse straight away, though, and although he missed twice in shootouts for Huddersfield last season, including in the League One play-off final, he is keen to take up the duty for his new club.

“In the last two shootouts I missed penalties for Huddersfield, which was really not ideal because before that I scored all but one of the penalties I had taken,” he said.

“The last two have been disappointing but I would love to take the next one.

“If I am playing I would love to take one, it has never bothered me in the past and I am confident now despite missing a couple.

“It used to keep being brought up all the time, and when I scored penalties people would say I had scored another and kept up a 100 per cent record.

“It was inevitable I would miss one eventually, even though I didn’t want to, but it kept getting talked about more and more, but I am still confident now.”

Miller will join the rest of the Town squad when they jet off to Italy tomorrow, where they will spend two weeks on the banks of Lake Garda preparing for the club’s assault on League One.

But while some players will be dreading the prospect of a gruelling Paolo Di Canio pre-season, Miller believes it is increasingly necessary for players of his age.

“Pre-season takes you to different places, and Lake Garda is a lovely place to go, although there will be a lot of hard work going on that is for sure,” he said.

“It is more important when you are getting older like me because you need to have a good pre-season to build up your base levels of fitness and then, during the season, you can build on that.

“When you get little knocks and niggles it seems to affect you a bit more as you get older, but if you get a good pre-season sorted then that can help you stay injury-free.

“It is also a great opportunity for you to be able to bond with your new teammates, and it is important you know each other well before the season starts.”

Meanwhile, the club confirmed yesterday that goalkeeper Mattia Lanzano has left the County Ground by mutual consent.

Teams who play attacking footie, and I hope Town will be one of them next season, usually reap a shedload of penalties as their opponents struggle to contain them. So glad to know that we have signed a player who relishes the job of taking them ! I look forward to Tommy banging `em in ! COME ON YOU REDS !

We haven't really had one for a while - well since Paynter left
.
Kennedy was it until he dropped out then they started being passed around Kerrouche, Ritchie and Caddis all took some
.
Impressive record so if Miller is one with a strong back up for if he is not playing (Caddis) and we should be sorted

Ray Treacy was a very efficient penalty taker, and I seem to remember he achieved an extremely high percentage rate of penalty successes.
Apologies to the younger Town Fans, because Ray played for Swindon Town many years ago.
Don Rogers was also a brilliant penalty taker as well; and apart from his heading ability was brilliant at everything else as well.

When I was a young lad I stood on the goal line with about six other lads and faced Don Rogers practising penalties. He scored everytime !
I remember Harry Cousins telling us he never ever failed to score a pen in training and he was right.

...goes misty eyed... 'Sir Don'... the word 'legend' is used ad nauseam these days...let's reserve it for the players who really deserve it. Don Rogers was my hero as a boy and still is to this day...gazes up to my framed portrait of the man, complete with 3D moving picture of Don volleying (from The Sun album), and the front page of 'Scorcher' from May 72 - top team - Swindon Town...marvellous

It is remarkable how some players have these penalty success rates - or is it? I'm appalled at the attitude of England down the years saying that there's no point practising penalties. Of course there is.

I've always practised taking penalties and have only ever missed one in my life - and that was the last one I ever took (although I was 48 and it was getting close to the time to hang up the boots).

I always reckoned you should practise two things with penalties - hitting it low and hard just inside the post until it becomes like clockwork; and disguising your run up so the keeper can't tell from your body shape where you're going to kick it.

With many players, it's so blindingly obvious from their run up which side they are going to kick it, e.g. Ashley Cole. Don't know why they don't practise disguise. And when you see a penalty like Pirlo's - well that's pure art.

Town's Ernie Hunt only ever missed one penalty.

totally agree, was so obvious with Cole's. At least England practised them this time, not that it worked!! I always went with theory of having 2 penalties and as you say having same run up for both so could not say for certain where going to put them. Nerves are big factor though which is prob why Miller missed in shoot outs as tend to have way more on them than an ordinary penalty in a league game. From personal experience have missed a penalty to win a cup final (luckily we won in sudden death!) and i can tell you my muscle memory went to pot. Still reckon Miller will slot vast majority away no problem. COYR

Peter Noble didn't take penalties for us because Don Rogers always took them but when he moved to Burnley he took all their penalties and I think I am right in saying he never ever missed one for them - amazing record. Nice to be reminded of Ray Treacy in some posts - he was some player and knew where the goal was, really skilful player.
