SWINDON TOWN: Archibald-Henville signs on at Town

SWINDON Town have made centre-back Troy Archibald-Henville their seventh summer signing.

The former Exeter man has agreed a two-year deal with the Robins.

Archibald-Henville turned down the offer of a new contract with the Grecians to sign for Swindon, but he will still command a fee as he is aged under 24.

Troy is only 24, but has 147 appearances for Exeter, not massively tall, 1.88cm, 3 goals and 3 reds, seems like a decent signing. Tisdale reportinglly said he couldn't afford to keep his 4 out of contract players. So probably an easy decision for him to make.

No messing about with transfers this season. Nearly all done before pre-season even starts. Happy days!

1.88cm is minute but 1.88m = 6' 2" in old money, so tall enough I would say.

Another quality signing, what a difference to last summer.

Personaly, I thought Devera had a better end of season than Flint. Flint, on his return after injury spent most of his time blaming those around him for his defensive mistakes, which were many at the end of the season? Devera started poorly, but was one of the players that vastly improved over the season. Just my humble opinion.

Agreed, but Flint is still quality. The player we don't need now is Risser, who provided additional cover at CB as well as playing in midfield.

Given the quality of our new signings, Risser won't even make the bench imo.

This is simply cover and competition
.
We saw last year when Flint was out that we suddenly became short
.
Depending on who goes out we may see another forward - but if Bodin signs on or Connell / Magera are kept I think we may well be done shopping until August at least

ciclosporindorset says...

Will be good to know what he is like with the ball at his feet! Macca gives this dimension unlike AF or JD. If this guy can play with the ball then Macca can push up as required into MF. With Navs and one of the other 3 defensive MF players this means 2 can leave - perm any 2 from Collins, Smith or Risser. Or one of the two mentioned above. No side needs 9 players at the back incl J.Smith IMO - this is not a squad rotation area. Then again just my opinion.

London Red says...
3:39pm Tue 26 Jun 12

Risser will be on the bench ahead of both Smith and Cox
.
Granted he won't start ahead of Navarro to often but that will only move him down to 2nd choice
.
Risser was pretty much an ever present in 2012 - I very much doubt he will go from that to scrap heap
.
Smith lost his place to Risser so fully expect him to be the one leaving

Anyone actually seen Troy play that can give a report?

I'm also with Mossy Devera for me over Flint at the end of last year, but hard to know how drinking effected everyone......

Can we leave this Macca to midfield, we now have four centre halfs and I'm loving the early signings. I think Paolo has learnt his lessons well from last year. We are hardly shelling out huge amounts for players but getting them out of contract an early so they can all have pre season together is very good business indeed in my eyes.

Back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend.

Flint's strength is clearing the high balls but his foot skills are pretty basic and showed no signs of improving last season. However, with the right guidance and coaching, he may blossom to become a very valuable player. I believe PdC feels the same so will keep him, at least until the "January Sales". If he develops on then good for all concerned. In the meantime we have a Div. 1 title to chase so - safety first - he has recruited Troy. Good Thinking!

He should get on well with Macca then, two bruisers at the back.

Probably has good distribution skills which is something Flint has yet to discover. I also thought Joe Devera had a good run from New Year and was pretty solid and dependable at the back, more so than Flint.

No frills, no nonsense, no silly goals given away. Not afraid to get stuck in, should go down very well with PDC and the rest of us then.

Welcome aboard young man.

Quite right 6 feet 2 inches in old money, and good mobility, and around three and a half seasons experience. I think he will be up for it this season with us. He obviously has ambition and desire to do well, and sees us as a means to become a Championship player.

I think this may well be the end of Risser, The main reason he was important to PDC was the fact he could drop back into defence giving some flexibility if required during a match....Troy can be deployed the other way around...we seem to have ignored the fact although Troy is predominatly a Central Defender (As Risser is predominatly a defensive Midfielder) he is also a defensive midfielder. Troy is faster (Speed being one of Risser's weak points) so I feel Flint and Devera are both in the plans along with Macca.

Another great signing going by the displeasure of the Exeter fans who are certainly not happy at losing him. We have been in this position before where other clubs bought our best players but hey Mr Wray and Paolo are on a mission which requires keeping ones best players so Town fans we are very lucky indeed to be part of this moment in time which requires all those fringe fans to dig deep and get those season tickets. If ever there was a time the club deserved recognition then this is it folks come support this club as they are pushing the boat out with some class signings and lets not forget keeping the star players also which is credit in itself. Onwards and upwards as Grim would say.

I remember when we averaged about 15,000 when a mid table division 3 side, and when we got promoted to the 1st division in 1970\1971 season our average was well over 20,000! Where have all those fans gone? And for a decent cup match we would easily pull in 28,000 fans.

Simply cannot doubt the commitment of the club and the board over the last year and the last couple of weeks in particular. Absolutely totally committed to diCanio and the cause. Seldom there has been a better time than right now, building for the future, stepping stones and building blocks all finding their place.
More signings to come, no doubt another good season in prospect, and of course the odd nail biter along the way.

Think a lot of you are going to have to ready yourself for some disappointment over Risser
.
TAH was signed as we only had 3 CBs and NOT as a replacement for anyone
.
Now I fully expect Risser to be on the plane on Sunday and barring injury to be in the matchday squad for Brighton (and not only that one)
.
As I said earlier you don't go from ever present to scrap heap - especially when there are others below him in the pecking order - they will go first

You may well be right LR...but then again a lot of people questioned why he was ahead of certain people (JS?) and it was probably because of the "utility" factor where he could play in either Midfield or Defence a roll which can now be done by TAH....either way though...it's all good news so far...and heres to a very succesful season!!!!

Oi Den! says...
11:00pm Tue 26 Jun 12

LR, you can't possibly know that TAH is NOT a replacement for someone. PDC could be thinking of showing the door to Flint or Devera, or he could be thinking of moving McCormack back to midfield. Any one of those is a possibility - unlikely maybe - but still a possibility. I can't read PDC's mind either but I think it's a fair bet that Archibald-Henville has his sights set on a first team place - and soon. It's when you make statements like "TAH was signed as we only had 3 CBs and NOT as a replacement for anyone" - as if you have some authoritative knowledge - that some people get brassed off.
.
I think we would/will be very lucky to keep 4 good central defenders happy. Continuity in defence is very important for building an understanding throughout the back 4 and the goalkeeper. If any two central defenders establish a solid understanding early in the season, I think it will be very difficult for anyone else to force their way in - barring injuries or suspensions of course.

Well I was 1 and I'm living in OZ now. I expect people have retired and moved on to other parts of the UK and overseas.
I still fly back twice a year and see about 8 games a season. In September I 'm back again and have set up for four" newbies "to see the town for the first time... cost me a hospitality package to do it though. For those that have not experienced a hospitality package you don't know what you are missing, it's a great day out. Great for a special occasion like birthdays.
On another matter Harry Kewell IS staying in the UK according to OZ news (wife's mother gravely ill) so he's looking for a club. To get some experience under Paolo before moving to management would be a good move for him. Doubt it would happen however.

I hope that we keep Macca, Flint and Devera. Goals conceded was so low last year, it would be hasty to lose any of those 3. Troy will add competition and will play his part no doubt.

I think it a little harsh to criticise Flint's distribution. The big man wins everything in the air, that his main strength. I see lots of plaudits for the more skilled Macca, but let's not forget he's not as good in the air. So each of them has 1 main strength and maybe a weakness. Devera is OK (now) in the air and OK on the deck, but he's not as skillful as Macca and not as good as Flint in the air. Macca and Devera are slightly more versatile as they can play right back too.

Maybe Troy has the lot and will be first choice, in which case fair play to him and you can take your pick from the others.

Personally I would like to see Flint stay and develop, as a young player if he can work on his distribution and passing he will be some player and worth some dough, unlike Devera and Macca who I suspect are unlikely to improve too much more (although I hope I'm wrong). That's 2 promotions in 2 years for Flint don't forget, and I would think his market value has already risen from the £150k we paid for him.....

The same applies to Jonathan Smith in midfield, I would like to see him stay as back-up to Navarro rather than Risser for the potential sell-on reason.

London Red says...
6:13am Wed 27 Jun 12

No authoritive knowledge - I just listen to what PdC / JW have said and like I said make an educated guess from there
.
PdC clearly said he wants 5 central midfielders before - yet lots are stating we should go down to 3 as we have 2 CBs that could fill in - completely against what the manager has said publically
.
It was clearly stated we were short at the back - now why it is a possibility TAH may replace someone I think it is highly unlikely given previous comments by the manager
.
Pre- season is upon us now - so we will see pretty soon how thing shape up
.
No inside knowledge but I would be shocked if Risser, Flint or Devera leave

ciclosporindorset says...
6:34am Wed 27 Jun 12

Agree PdC has said before that he wanted 5 cb and 5 mf. That was a year ago. Maybe he has learned some things since. Jw has commented he wants PdC to be given 17 to 18 players for regular games which suggests something different.

I agree, but with 7 new signings challenging for places, some players will slip down the pecking order.

London Red says...
8:27am Wed 27 Jun 12

PdC said he only had 7 he could rely on in 2011 - Wes, Caddis, Macca, Flint, Ferry, Ritchie and probably RDV at that time - with the rest chopping and changing
.
He then said that by the end of the season that pool had grown to 15 or 16 - with the likes of Devera , Connell and Risser forcing their way in and new signings like Rooney, Benson, Holmes and McEveley joining
.
Now we didn't just have a squad of 15 this year - so the same will apply next year
.
We could have 19 as 1 injury and 1 suspension and we couldn't field a full matchday squad
.
What I understood it to be is they want a core 19 who will make up 90% of every matchday squad supplemented by the remaining squad to cover injuries and suspensions - which is likely to be the primarily younger players like Storey and C.Smith
.
Agreed lots of the new signings will see the pecking order change and the likes of Flint, Devera, Ferry and Risser are "at risk" but that should only see them on the bench - with the players who were on the bench or not in the squad this year leaving - ala the 7 released so far
.
I think another 5 will go - Lanzano, J.Smith, Connell, Bodin and Magera
.
Then one more forward will come in as we will only have 3 main strikers with RDV and Storey as winger/forwards
.
However, if Magera is returning - like hinted at when he first went on loan by himself and JW - then I think no more forwards as he will make it 4 main ones
