Bristol Combination Cup U15 Midsomer Norton 0 Chippenham 69
Chippenham's Under 15s were clearly up for this encounter with Midsomer Norton. They routed the home side in this first round match in the Bristol Combination Cup.
Scoring eleven tries and seven conversions from the boot of Jake Emery, the referee brought the game to an end with twenty minutes left on the clock, otherwise the score could have been more.
A very committed forward display giving quality ball to the waiting backs, enabled them to cut loose. Just twenty seconds into the game, Chippenham had their first try as Kuldeep Singh picked up a loose ball from the kick-off. He passed out to the backs, giving centre Neil Jenkins to score.
Two minutes later Jenkins went over for his second try after a forward drive. Quick ball to full-back Harry Smith who off-loaded to Jenkins who ran in between the posts. The conversion was an easy kick for Emery.
Emery was then involved with the next try. He punted into the Norton corner where centre Kalum House snatched a loose ball and scored.
Ten minutes into the game and Jenkins had completed a hat-trick of tries after another forward drive and quick ball out to the centres. It was then the turn of Smith who found himself in space after some inter-passing between the backs.
He ran in for his try from outside the Norton 22metre line. Three more tries followed before the half-time whistle from Jenkins, Emery and Sloan.
The pattern was repeated in the second half with Jenkins grabbing his fifth try and House also making completing a hat-trick of tries. His third try was a fine solo effort, running half the length of the pitch with the ball in his hand to score.
Ten minutes into the half, Midsomer Norton were awarded a penalty which they chose to tap and run.
But Chippenham's second row Nick Jones put in a crunching tackle which stopped the attack dead and at that point, the Midsomer Norton coach conceded defeat and the game was brought to an end.
An emphatic win for the visitors who now progress through to the quarter-finals.
Bristol Combination Cup U14 Walcot 5 Chippenham 5
Chippenham's Under 14s had a very close match in this year's Bristol Combination Cup away at local rivals and neighbours, Walcot.
The kick-off was delayed due to other matches being played during the morning but the game started at 1pm.
Chippenham started very well in the opening exchanges, putting pressure on Walcot from the off. This early pressure paid off as Chippenham winger, Alistair Todd scored an early try in the left hand corner within the first five minutes.
The game then became very tit-for-tat with both sides mounting attacks into each other's half of the pitch which eventually saw Walcot equalise just before the half-time whistle.
The style of the second half was very much a repeat of the first with both sides making a lot of handling errors and giving away needless penalties.
With ten minutes remaining on the clock, Chippenham stepped up the pace of their game but some resolute defending from Walcot denied them the try they worked hard to create.
On the final whistle, the score was tied at 5-5 but as the away side, Chippenham took the honours. The last two years has seen Chippenham go out of the Bristol Combination Cup on the away side rule but this year, it worked in their favour.
Bristol Combination Cup U13 Walcot 22 Chippenham 17
Chippenham's Under 13 team also played at Walcot in this year's Bristol Combination Cup in their first round match.
Both teams appeared evenly matched and in the first ten minutes, the play went from end to end as both sides battled hard to create the chances. It was Walcot who opened the scoring. A break from the home side gave way to their first try, which was also converted.
But minutes later, Chippenham winger Oli Phipps ran in the visitors' first try, touching down under the posts and this was ably converted by outside centre, Matt Watchman. The scores were now tied at 7-7.
A second try for Chippenham came from second row Ollie New but this time the conversion was unsuccessful. For the first time in the match, Chippenham had the lead.
Walcot retaliated hard and just on the half-time whistle, scored two quick tries although both the conversions were missed, and regained the lead at the break - 17-12.
The second half continued in the same vein, both sides battling hard. Chippenham managed to keep Walcot in their own half with numerous drives forward. But as the half progressed, Walcot put the game beyond reach with their final try.
Although Chippenham did not give up and continued to work hard to the final whistle. Walcot found themselves having to defend their line time and time again.
Chippenham scrum-half Austin Strong did go over the line to score the visitors' final try but it was the home side who progress through at this age-group.
