Well done Paulo, we still want a club in 3, 5 , 10 , 50 years so none of the short sighted overspending of past years. Actually, I' quite excited by what he says here - he says he has a budget to compete and succeed at L1 level but we are not going to be siy.

On that PdC basically confirms our budget as £4m - but emphasises that is all in including transfer fees, signing on feed and existing squad members

We must be due the confirmation of Williams tomorrow as PdC reaction to the question clearly shows he is coming and highly rated by PdC

I think if we land Bostock we will see Williams on the left of a 3 behind Benson - with Rooney as the sub to come on anywhere across that line

If not then he will likely play up with Benson and Rooney on the left of a 442 like last season

Benson will probably not be first choice striker this season. More of a Fallon behind Mooney and Parkin. I would expect to see at least 2 more quality strikers coming in.

I don't think you should have problems moving players on from a championship side. Most league 2 sides would take any of our squad.

A very very reassuring post indeed, whilst we all have the scent of success the financial security of the club is and always must be the absolute number one priority - just look at Rangers...

If £4m is true, a £4m budget in L1 is good amount, especially given the strong nucleous of the current squad. Can't wait for August!

Sounds to me like we are looking at mostly Freebies. Not a bad thing when the likes of McEveley are available. Also sounds like we may have a bit spare for bidding for a contracted player or two !

Who will be our opponents in our first game ?

Sheffield Utd at Home would be an interesting opener but I'll go for a stunning trip to Hartlepool to really set the pulses racing :-)

PDC Loves Benson, he will be the first name on the team sheet, and to be fair will get 20 goals in this league this year.

Lets do a deal with Torquay, allow Bodin to go and get one of their top players in.

I think what people were hoping for is that he signs for united and then loaned out for a season. Seems to be in United thoughts...like you say though it is a bit unrealistic he will come here...Fergie will probably want him to get some action in the Championship.

I'm not fussed about knowing what the manager's playing budget is. The club is never going to come out and say exactly how much he has to spend. It's clear we will again have better financial backing than most clubs in the division, as well as being one of the best supported. That'll do me for starters.

Benson is more than able at league one level. It's his quiet abilities that make him such a great player at this level - to hold up and move the ball on, show strength on the ball, read and dictate the pace of the attacking football and put himself in the right place at the right time. What he needs IMHO is a quick and creative striker/AM with at least 20 goals in him to work with. We saw moments of this with Connell. The TYPE of striker pdc brings in is key to the success forward line.

Last season, i believe Benson showed himself as was one of the best players we've seen at the CG for a number of years.

Oxon is right that we don't really need to pay for anyone to build a really strong team with the sheer number and qauilty available on the PFA list

I guess the main issue would be wages and signing-on fees of some as we saw with Holmes and the rumoured Bowyer

Since the list was finally released I have been looking at it every few days annoting down any interesting possibilities - I have not included players I thought would be unrealistic like Heskey, Fuller, Reo-Corker, Gabbidon and even Bowyer due to wages, demand etc

However, there is still a hefty list in pretty much every position - the only one I didn't look at was fullbacks as we are covered there - assuming JM signs

There are some good names on LR's list, some though are over 35's, I would prefer to be looking beyond one season plus they would probably want big wages.

Oldies can be good as we have lots of youngens at the moment

Its like the Olympics - your squad is mainly young but you add in a few old heads to guide the ship

Fodders, Caddis, Thompson, Flint, Ritchie, Ferry, Smith, Rooney, Bodin and Storey are all young (under 25) and still learning
.
We saw once Benson arrived how that old head improved us - so a couple more here and there would be good
.
With our midfield likely to be Ritchie, Ferry and Rooney - an old head there would do us good
.
JM at 28 adds to Macca in the experience stakes and did improve us at the back compared to Kennedy (who while was good was still raw due to lack of game time)

Some interesting names on the list , but would rather a young hungry player looking to improve , than a journeyman looking to pick up a last wage packet, the likes of Dele Adebola are still commanding fee`s of 6 to 7k a week. See Torquay are looking to reinvesting any money from the sale of Eunan O'Kane in a deal for Swindon Town's Billy Bodin. Why not use Bodin as a bargianing tool and get O`Kane here , makes sence ?

Not sure if this has been mentioned earlier but there has been some interest in Brightons Alan Navarro.

Not if Paolo doesn't want him it doesn't. The story last week was that we wern't after O'Kane.

Did I read somewhere that Holmes wanted a six figure signing on fee? The transfer fee is still there; it just goes to the player instead of the selling club. Effectively, the player is selling himself. It will all come down to what his value is. So I don't see why we should concentrate on this list of "free" players. If players under contract are good enough and we can afford them, we should be looking to prise them away from their current clubs, as well as looking at those out of contract.

I wasn't knocking the value of experience, that would be ridiculous, but I'm not convinced we should be looking at Ormerod who is 35, high wages and has maybe 1 season left? Benson at 32 has been great, would be reasonable wages and also has a few seasons left. I wouldn't be keen on recruiting too much above 32 unless it's someone special that wouldn't break the bank.

Den - even if you pay for someone they still can demand a signing on fee

So if for example we had to pay Saints £50k for Holmes - we would end up spending £150k after his fee

So going for the freebies would "free up" that £50k to land another

We should only pay for someone now if they are truely special - as there are lots of frees

Although I don't pretend to understand the detail of how it all works, I still have the feeling that "free" players (and, perhaps more importantly, the dreaded agents) will be well aware of their market value and will jack up their demands accordingly. So in the end I'm not sure that signing one of these free players would work out that much cheaper than buying him while he was still in contract.

I disagree about January. I'd like to see us start with a side that's capable of making a real challenge. If we can add to that in January, fine. But I hope it's not a necessity.

he loves Risser too, I know love is blind, but I hope he is not going to be getting too many starts based on how hard he trains.

Im glad we're not going for someone like bowyer who's 35 now. He would be looking for big wages and could be past it by now. It would be better to find younger pro's along (the next bowyers's) with a couple of experienced pro's in there late 20's. Having said this Id still like us to push the boat out and sign at least one quality striker as that could well be the difference in getting out of this league at the first attempt.
jon parkin would be a great signing as a big unit who can score goals.

Sky reports Parkin has signed for Fleetwood Town today. Agree we don't want any 35 year olds. Think Paolo will target players around the 26 to 28 years of age, experience but should still have a bit of pace.

On poxford mail apparently another bid for James Constable from us but been turned down
