Di Canio: "No crazy signings"
6:00am Wednesday 13th June 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio has revealed that he turned down the chance to sign a “very good player” for Swindon this summer because of the amount of money required to seal the deal, as he emphasised that he will not break the bank in pursuit of back to back promotions.
Town have yet to formally complete any transfer business since the end of last season, although Di Canio has stressed that he is close to finalising two or three signings as he builds a squad capable of challenging for elevation from League One.
Swindon recently failed in their attempts to lure Lee Holmes to the County Ground, with the winger opting instead to join Preston on a permanent basis, but Di Canio did not name the individual he was unwilling to bring in due to budgetary constraints.
And the Italian insisted he will not risk the club’s medium and long-term futures for the sake of one or two luxuries on his playing staff.
“It’s obvious that we have to increase the wages because in League One a player who has already won League One, already played in the Championship - they join Swindon,” he said.
“Because it’s a big name, there is a big ambition but big ambition goes close to the wages in such a level.
“But we don’t make crazy negotiations. Already I had the chance to bring one very good player but the amount of money was too much for the budget I’ve got because I didn’t want to break not only the budget but also the atmosphere.
“The other guys that will join us, the people will know they will have basic wages higher compared to last year but that is normal football but not crazy because also our main players increase their wages.
“They are the right wages for a player, a very good player for this league, can have if you want to win the league.”
Di Canio moved to put to bed rumours regarding Town’s overall budget for the 2012/13 campaign, reassuring fans that the total he has to play with is more than adequate at Swindon’s new level.
“About the rumours that sometimes I’ve heard, the people don’t know what they’re talking about with the amount we’ve got to spend - five (million), four, three, four,” he said.
“What we have to buy players and pay players is a very good amount of money for this league and we can work well, but it doesn’t include the money for the players we’ve got.
“Altogether now we have to work for the exit because we have to send out some.
“More than some, maybe five or six at least, and have more money to bring in the players that I need.
“Otherwise, I can bring with the money I can spend approximately only five players, and six if I’m lucky.”

.
On that PdC basically confirms our budget as £4m - but emphasises that is all in including transfer fees, signing on feed and existing squad members
.
We must be due the confirmation of Williams tomorrow as PdC reaction to the question clearly shows he is coming and highly rated by PdC
.
I think if we land Bostock we will see Williams on the left of a 3 behind Benson - with Rooney as the sub to come on anywhere across that line
.
If not then he will likely play up with Benson and Rooney on the left of a 442 like last season

If £4m is true, a £4m budget in L1 is good amount, especially given the strong nucleous of the current squad. Can't wait for August!

Who will be our opponents in our first game ?
Sheffield Utd at Home would be an interesting opener but I'll go for a stunning trip to Hartlepool to really set the pulses racing :-)

for those that were hoping (unrealistcally!) for Nick Powell, he's signed for united... some deal for crewe too - initial 3 million and maybe rising to 6 million...

Oxon is right that we don't really need to pay for anyone to build a really strong team with the sheer number and qauilty available on the PFA list
I guess the main issue would be wages and signing-on fees of some as we saw with Holmes and the rumoured Bowyer
Since the list was finally released I have been looking at it every few days annoting down any interesting possibilities - I have not included players I thought would be unrealistic like Heskey, Fuller, Reo-Corker, Gabbidon and even Bowyer due to wages, demand etc
However, there is still a hefty list in pretty much every position - the only one I didn't look at was fullbacks as we are covered there - assuming JM signs
The ones which caught my eye were:
GK
Joe Lewis
Jamie Ashdown
Brad Guzan
Ben Alnwick

Hermann Hreidarsson

Its like the Olympics - your squad is mainly young but you add in a few old heads to guide the ship
.
Fodders, Caddis, Thompson, Flint, Ritchie, Ferry, Smith, Rooney, Bodin and Storey are all young (under 25) and still learning
.
We saw once Benson arrived how that old head improved us - so a couple more here and there would be good
.
With our midfield likely to be Ritchie, Ferry and Rooney - an old head there would do us good
.
JM at 28 adds to Macca in the experience stakes and did improve us at the back compared to Kennedy (who while was good was still raw due to lack of game time)

So if for example we had to pay Saints £50k for Holmes - we would end up spending £150k after his fee
.
So going for the freebies would "free up" that £50k to land another
.
We should only pay for someone now if they are truely special - as there are lots of frees
.
Jan is where I would like to see money spent picking one or 2 who would really make a diff lime this year
.
Wilesy - There are also loads of Kids on the list - its just I don't know anything about them
.
I didn't realise Ormerod was that old thought he was only 31 or 32

Anyway he was only 1 out of 10 forwards so we could easily go for a younger player like Webber, Forsell or Mitrovic

I disagree about January. I'd like to see us start with a side that's capable of making a real challenge. If we can add to that in January, fine. But I hope it's not a necessity.

Im glad we're not going for someone like bowyer who's 35 now. He would be looking for big wages and could be past it by now. It would be better to find younger pro's along (the next bowyers's) with a couple of experienced pro's in there late 20's. Having said this Id still like us to push the boat out and sign at least one quality striker as that could well be the difference in getting out of this league at the first attempt.
