SOUTH WEST WEEK GOLF, DAY TWO: Second win for hosts

WILTSHIRE overcame appalling conditions and on-course mishaps to claim their second victory at South West Week at Cumberwell Park, near Bradford on Avon, today.

The hosts, who went on to lift the national title in 2011, dominated their clash against Cornwall to clinch a 8.25-6.25 win.

As on day one, there were singles victories in the morning for former skipper Ali James and rookie Robbie Busher, while Bowood's Jordan Smith and Broome Manor's Yoshio Takeuchi also won.

Needing just two of the afternoon foursomes, James and Josh Loughrey (Wrag Barn) claimed a 3&2 win.

Smith and Bowood colleague Garry Slade won by one hole before Ben Loughrey and Tom Burley (Burnham & Berrow) recorded a one hole win, despite a two-hole penalty for Loughrey having 15 clubs in his bag and a Cornwall ball being inadvertently picked up.

Tuesday's action sees a 36-hole individual and team strokeplay championship - each county nominating six players whose aggregated scores determine the Team Championship.

The winning county in that will represent the South West in the English County Finals later this year - the title Wiltshire claimed for the first-time ever in Yorkshire last September.

Wiltshire, who swept the South West Week board last year, winning all matchplay and strokeplay individual and team titles last year, return to matchplay action against Somerset on Wednesday.

The news was less good for Wiltshire's ladies at their South West Week as they were thumped 8.5-0.5 on their first day at Trevose in Cornwall.

Alex Patton (Manor House, Castle Combe) claimed Wiltshire's solitary point.
