Don, good post and Toshman, some good valid points.

It seems to me that we now have what the board have been looking for since their take over, a firm, fair, but successful manager.

By being prudent now is the time as Paolo has revealed to start putting longer term building blocks in place as goes the team . With the correct players coming in now and perhaps closer work with the youth set up we could start to build a small but effective dynasty. We know we are going to have to sell players at some point, but if Crewe can do it, perhaps we can also turn out good lads to help replace those that get sold on, but on a smaller scale .

After the failings of Malpas, the loans of Wilson, we now have the chance to put all that behind us, with solid longer term planning, now the right man occupies the managers position."

Di Canio targets 'seven or eight' new signings

PAOLO Di Canio is looking to bring seven or eight new players to the County Ground this summer as he bids to guide Swindon Town to back-to-back promotions.

The Italian was busy in the transfer market in his first summer as a manager, but eventually was able to assemble a squad which swept all before them to claim the League Two title.

Di Canio has already missed out on one potential signing as he plots the club’s path to the Championship, with former loanee Lee Holmes having joined Preston, but he is already looking to other targets for this summer before potentially dipping into the transfer market again in January.

“I had in my head a few players although we lost one already because Lee Holmes has signed for Preston,” he said.

“I would have liked have him, but in England there are many many good players.

“It is difficult to say the numbers, but approximately I would say I would like seven or eight players because I think it is the number that can guarantee to me a good start of the season and see where we are in December.

“Then, like we did last year, if we are very close to the play-offs the board can help me with the final push and win the league in the way we won last year.

“Now is the moment to work, we have 25 days approximately to bring if not all of the players, 60-70 per cent of the players I want in.”

Di Canio has been busy studying League One football while he has been away in Italy, and sees no reason why the club can not be pushing for a second straight promotion next May.

“It is obvious we will try and do everything to gain the next promotion, but we know that will be more difficult because there will be many clubs that already have a strong squad with experience and quality,” he said.

“But now we have a bit more time than last year to build a strong team and month by month see where we can stay.

“We will try to go up and stay close to the top team and see if we can build the belief during the season which I believe we can.

“We have to be honest, we won League Two very well with a good squad but the next level is a different level.

“We start a little bit, not too much, behind the clubs which were close to winning the league like Sheffield United or the clubs that went down like Coventry and Portsmouth.

“I watched many games, including Charlton and Huddersfield who got promoted, and I have to tell you if we can bring in some of the players I would like to have then we can have satisfaction.”
