Di Canio targets 'seven or eight' new signings

PAOLO Di Canio is looking to bring seven or eight new players to the County Ground this summer as he bids to guide Swindon Town to back-to-back promotions.

The Italian was busy in the transfer market in his first summer as a manager, but eventually was able to assemble a squad which swept all before them to claim the League Two title.

Di Canio has already missed out on one potential signing as he plots the club’s path to the Championship, with former loanee Lee Holmes having joined Preston, but he is already looking to other targets for this summer before potentially dipping into the transfer market again in January.

“I had in my head a few players although we lost one already because Lee Holmes has signed for Preston,” he said.

“I would have liked have him, but in England there are many many good players.

“It is difficult to say the numbers, but approximately I would say I would like seven or eight players because I think it is the number that can guarantee to me a good start of the season and see where we are in December.

“Then, like we did last year, if we are very close to the play-offs the board can help me with the final push and win the league in the way we won last year.

“Now is the moment to work, we have 25 days approximately to bring if not all of the players, 60-70 per cent of the players I want in.”

Di Canio has been busy studying League One football while he has been away in Italy, and sees no reason why the club can not be pushing for a second straight promotion next May.

“It is obvious we will try and do everything to gain the next promotion, but we know that will be more difficult because there will be many clubs that already have a strong squad with experience and quality,” he said.

“But now we have a bit more time than last year to build a strong team and month by month see where we can stay.

“We will try to go up and stay close to the top team and see if we can build the belief during the season which I believe we can.

“We have to be honest, we won League Two very well with a good squad but the next level is a different level.

“We start a little bit, not too much, behind the clubs which were close to winning the league like Sheffield United or the clubs that went down like Coventry and Portsmouth.

“I watched many games, including Charlton and Huddersfield who got promoted, and I have to tell you if we can bring in some of the players I would like to have then we can have satisfaction.”

Did the media bother to enquire about McEveley and Bostock????
.
Now I'm no journo - but thought that would be a logical next step

Lee Holmes wasn't used enough anyway as nearly everything went down the other side.
If PDC thinks 7 or 8 players then he must be bailing out more too, or were going to end up with a big squad of mediocre players.
I want some big strong players that hold their own and don't get knocked off the ball easily.

I think as players come in then others will be let go, Paolo won't want to release too many just to find out the player he targeted as a replacement is suddenly not coming, One of the things that really impressed me with Paolo was that not only did he admit his mistakes....he learnt from that straight away.
Exciting few weeks ahaed I think!!!!

It's as I said Weeks ago, thought we'd bring in 8 or 9, not a bad guess though I still think it'll be that many not forgetting we need a reserve keeper too. I can see bostock being released by spurs on the understanding he comes here and mcev come in too. 2 strikers with connell and Murray going plus Bodin on his way, there's no way he'll get games. I can see storey coming up and getting bench time. Another versatile winger possibly 2 and then central midfielders, the back line needs no attention provided mcev signs. Still think risser will go, and though I like him, I Smith too, I think Cox might have a better season

Tosh we do need another CB as we are short there - we don't want to be in a situation where McEveley or Caddis have to fill in!
.
I don't think we need a reserve keeper as we never name one on the bench - Bedwell can go on the bench if we do need one he was there 4 or 5 times this season
.
Then if we do get an injury we simply go into the laon market like we did to get Wes
.
Also that is assuming Lanzano goes back to Italy - if not he is still babout for another season so we might as well use him
.
He is nowhere near as bad as some made out so can easily fill the back up role

What we need for Div 1 Paolo,is a bit more Power, Strength,Muscle mixed with our small tricky skilful players,Div 1 is more powerful like Stevenage!no stars but a very strong powerful team and their wage bill is less than half ours!they finished Sixth.so a little bit more Power and a Goalscoring Striker should be the Targets!!!!!!

What a Manager we have. He goes on a break and ends up watching last seasons Div 1 games !!........you have to love him for the dedication even more so after his personal losses last season.

Reading Chris Kamara's biography as he was one of my favourite Town players. Di Canio gets a mention. Rednapp closed the training session and the players went off for lunch except Paolo he puts on his running gear and goes through lots of running and exercises. Rednapp says to Kammy you don't have to manage players like him (Paolo).

You can see the standards he sets are so high and we the fans get the rewards. Best Manager in years and just adds total excitement to following Swindon up and down the Country.

Good shout Don. Top of the shopping list should be a midfield powerhouse and a Paynter-type striker who will bully defenders and work his arse off tracking back when needed. If we could get those two, we would be well on course. Easier said than done, I know!

First great news Pdc extended his contract.
as to 7/8 players let's hope he gets a good mix, strong strikers are needed,we were lightweight last season Beson was super and what a Super Sub connel was.
I still hope Lucas magera comes good as he is a big lad and you get the feeling if he starts scoring he will do ok.
So wonder who is coming in?????
Again great news

I know .. I know ... I'm on about Smithy again. You can't turn the clock back but getting rid was a huge mistake imo. We now have a minor problem in the gk dept. What do you reckon LR?

London Red says...
12:51pm Thu 31 May 12

I don't reckon we do have a problem
.
Wes is a far superior keeper and will play pretty much every game unless injured - as we saw last year he missed only 1 JPT game and 1 League game!
.
We then have Lanzano and Bedwell on the books as back up should they be required - i.e Lanzano could have easily played against AFC and Gills
.
Yes Lanzano c0cked up against Burton - but Smithy c0cked up a lot over a lot of seasons - including the game he cam in for (Gills)!
.
The only reason to have a "top draw" reserve keeper is if he is good enough to actually challenge your main keeper
.
Smith wasn't so why have him taking up wages?
.
Bedwell and Lanzano can do the smae job of doing training with Wes

Stevenage wage half ours, then Westley done a darn good job,now hes at Preston the moneys gone to his head, paying an average player like Holmes all that money,no pressure at Stevenage, lets see how he does under pressure at a big club like Preston,he has to get promotion or thats a failure.

Lanzano not good enough as back up and Bedwell not ready for Div 1.

A new keeper will be a target for sure.

Holmes was no great loss - good and then frustrating in equal measure. Lacked physical power and speed despite his obvious skill. Would love to see Bostock here next season but just wonder what his wage bill would be? We definitely need more players with physical presence (combined with skill of course, no Darren Bullock's thanks!) in midfield and up front. Much as I rate Billy Bodin I can't see him staying, not convinced he would accept being part of squad rotation and I don't think he would hold down a regular starting berth. Can't wait for the new season.

Don, good post and Toshman, some good valid points.

It seems to me that we now have what the board have been looking for since their take over, a firm, fair, but successful manager.

By being prudent now is the time as Paolo has revealed to start putting longer term building blocks in place as goes the team . With the correct players coming in now and perhaps closer work with the youth set up we could start to build a small but effective dynasty. We know we are going to have to sell players at some point, but if Crewe can do it, perhaps we can also turn out good lads to help replace those that get sold on, but on a smaller scale .

After the failings of Malpas, the loans of Wilson, we now have the chance to put all that behind us, with solid longer term planning, now the right man occupies the managers position.

Ah, didn't realise we'd had any interest in him. He's looked OK in a few games I've seen on the box but to be honest I don't like to suggest possible transfer targets (except maybe players who've been with us before) because you never know how they will work out for us.

is that striker list really all there is available on a free? I think we'll probably going to have to invest a transfer fee to get a goalscorer or two.
are we still in talks with andy williams or did he sign for mk dons in the end? He'd have been a better bet as a winger instead of holmes.(and could fill in as striker). Hadnt realised preston had a lot of cash to throw at there squad, good job we've got the better manager.
