SWINDON TOWN: Boss is Ferry happy with Simon

Simon Ferry Simon Ferry

PAOLO Di Canio has praised midfielder Simon Ferry for forcing his way into the Swindon manager’s thoughts last season.

Di Canio admitted that he considered offloading the Scot at the beginning of the campaign before the former Celtic man applied himself to the Italian’s training methods, and ended up making 54 appearances for the Robins, as they stormed to the League Two title.

Reflecting on Ferry’s emergence from fringe player to talisman, Di Canio expressed his admiration of the 24-year-old.

“If they stay, someone can win the battle,” he told the Advertiser. “At the beginning, Simon Ferry won the battle.

“I said to him ‘you know that you can go because I cannot guarantee the place’, but he said ‘no, I want to stay, I want to battle.’

“But it’s difficult and there are not many others. In 10, nine are not going to win the battle in this way because I have my opinion, and for sure someone would realise to go in some place where they have a request.

“It’s a mutual exchange. This year they helped me to win, I helped them to be a better player.”

Meanwhile, Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that Town have previously courted Posh forward Nicky Ajose.

Rumours were rife on the internet yesterday linking the young frontman with a move to the County Ground, and Ferguson said Swindon have taken a look at the 20-year-old in the past.

"I was aware of some interest from Swindon towards the end of last season, but nothing happened,” he said.

“I've heard nothing so far this summer."

It has emerged that former Town defender Alberto Comazzi is amongst the players who are being questioned by officials in Italy over accusations of match-fixing.

Comazzi, who turned out five times for the Robins during the early part of last season before being sent back to Italy, was named in his native country earlier this month as one of 61 individuals set to be probed by the authorities.

Very interesting, given how overweight and uninterested he was the previous season. Well done Simon, and it sounds as though the night on the town is forgiven.
Re Comazzi, hope for his sake there is nothing in this.

Glad that you made Paolo keep you wee laddie.

On another note we may be signing Luke McCormack the jailed ex Plymouth keeper, he has been training with us apparantly.
He was a good keeper before his drink driving or death by dangerous driving wrap.
I've got no objections if he's changed his ways, we all make mistakes.

Keep it going Simon - I think you are a great player providing you concentrate more on the football and not the 'falling down water'

Now there's a good reason for signing McCormack. He'd be a constant reminder of what could happen if you inbibe too much.

Regarding McCormick - didn't think the players were training at the mo and he's not due to be released until June.

I can't see that Luke McCormack has paid his debt to society.
Two dead children and a seriously injured father is too much for me.
I would no more want Luke here than Lee Hughes.
Think again Swindon.

He's been training whilst on day release over the last few months.
He's also booked to go on the Italian pre season tour in July , according to BBC.

Drink driving is a very serious thing especially so if you hurt or kill someone.
In the past we've had ex jailbirds playing for us, Paul Edwards, and Pericard to name but 2.Andy Nicholas just escaped being sent down for drink driving .
Then there was England & Arsenal captain Tony Adams also Lee Hughs both Jailed for drink driving, there have been others too.
Maybe the jury is still out on us signing him but as I said before we all make mistakes. Is there anyone reading this that can honestly say that they have never driven after having a sip of ale ? Most would have driven after having 2 pints, some will have driven after consuming considerably more. How lucky have you all been !

i groaned when i saw the title just some more filler that they got from an interview weeks ago but interesting stuff about nicky ajose.

Apparently a tricky forward highly rated by peterborough despite only making the one appearance for them-no goals.
Had a good season for Bury scoring 11 in 23 or something like that but that seems to be it as he didnt score at all when he was on loan at scunthorpe and only the once when he was at chesterfield so could go either way with that signing.

Dont know much about McCormick but he was a good championship keeper for plymouth and coventry and if he's happy to bench-warm here then it could be a great signing although you might have to watch the wages there.

No mention of another we have been after who is a Montenegran international center midfielder- Mladen Kascelan who is out of contract with a bulgarian club and their press are saying that we have been after him but no money involved yet- and yes he did play against england when Rooney got sent off and suspended, looks a tidy player on youtube...

If this is the same guy who killed a young boy and left a father paralysed for life through wreckless drink driving it would be nothing short of a total disgrace if we signed him... I for one hope that nothing comes of this signing and he never plays professional football agins. The few years that he's done in side is nothing compared to the poor family that have to live with losing their son for the rest of their lives!

Two boys killed !

Listening to J.W on the radio right now it seems likely that we will sign him. J.W puts up a very elequent and sensible take on the subject, he said what I said earlier, that if him signing stops one other player having a drink and picking up his car keys then it's been worth it.
I was at the party on the pitch and I saw some players drinking heavily and one who shall remain nameless drove his car home.

In response to Stilloyal ...

Your liberal-minded views on drink-drivers may go down well in some places, but I think your view is appalling. Anyone that drinks under the influence and causes an accident deserves nothing but society's disgust.

This guy, having killed two children and destroyed a family should still be in prison - and I'd say the same thing in another twenty years too.

Well done to Si but please do something about the shooting now!!
On McCormack signing - why? We have pushed hard to be recognised as a family club. There are a raft of keepers available. Why on earth do we want this kind of publicity! Before today I could not think of anything that would stop me watching games next season.

Ashdown would be a better option as a keeper just been released from Pompey and a very decent stopper. As for McCormick he is only on trial once he realises we don't play prison rules he may be dogs**t and we won't sign him anyway. Well done Si Ferry every single Town fan was preying you'd prove Di Canio wrong and you did.

I hardly post on here and usually take a level headed view on most things however, the mcCormack signing would be bad. I'm sorrry, but there is a distinct difference in driving a bit over the speed limit and causing an accident (most of us will admit to now and again driving over the speed limit) and being p*ssed up behind the wheel of the car and causing an accident. Had speed been the only factor here then one could make an argument for giving the guy a chance BUT, as I understand it, this was in fact not the case and so he deserves no career in the game and no second chance. It would have been justified if he had died in the accident and the child and father were unharmed.

Regardless of this talk, Fodders will be no1 for us for a long time and barring injury this chap won't game any game time anyway.

Foderingham, Foderingham!

First to hear that Simon ferry is among the chosen ones.Think he knuckled down last season and worked hard so well done Simon.
as to the Goali who has served a prison term for Death By DD,yes he has done his time but you must consder the family what must they feel.Believe me i speak from experience I lost my Daughter in an accident In Queens drive many years ago where 5 people were killed..
So for me it's so difficult, part of me say's life must go on and the young man needs a chance, yet the other say's no way should the Town sign him.
So over to the Powers to be again a lot depends on his discharge and medical report .
As posts have stated how many of us have had a few Beers and were over the limit,I dread to think I guess many of us.So this one must be dealt with in the right manner.

The McCormack issue is bound to be sensative in some quarters but the facts are simple in my mind- 1.The sentence he received for this very sad crime right or wrong has been served 2.Everybody has a right to work after completing their sentence, just so happens this guys talent is football.3 For those thinking of not turning up because of it i have a question-would they boycott Tescos or any other business that may employ ex offenders?

Well done ferry, proved a lot of people wrong after your poor season in 2010/2011, good luck for the upcoming season.

Regarding the GK, I will seriously be thinking about continuing to pay for my season ticket for the new season, there is no way I am going to work all day and then pay some of my money to pay for this blokes wages..... 2/3 years in jail for killing 2 children and paralyising their father is not him serving his time!!! People say he isn't a murderer but in my eyes he is just that..... A murderer, a car is just as lethal as a loaded gun and this was proved in this sad accident, if you sit behind the wheel of a car and drive like a c**t if under the influence or not then you have to accept that you could end up in a accident that might possibly kill someone and because of those actions it meant you kill someone then in my eyes you are a murderer!!!

STFC..... Please don't sign this waste of space!!!

So we get rid of Smithy and then go for McCormack. Is McCormack that good, and so better than Smithy ?
But I think there has to be a lesson in morality here. This makes me feel very uncomfortable.

FYI I don't have a liberal view on drink driving , I've only stated facts.
The facts are he's being released next month and he has to do something in society or would you rather have him on the dole claiming benifits ?

Sorry mate, thought you were refering to the 5 kids mown down by a speeding driver in Akers Way a few years back, another tragedy.
Speed limits are there for a reason same as drink drive limits , and speed + drink is even worse if thats possible, also applies to drug driving.
