SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio is talking tactics
6:00am Tuesday 22nd May 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio wants his Swindon Town team to add several more tactical strings to their bow when they take on the best League One has to offer next season.
The Robins boss said he had to ditch his blueprint for several different styles of football after just a few months in the County Ground hotseat.
However, with a new challenge to prepare for in English football’s third tier, Di Canio is aiming to reintroduce what he calls “plans A, B, C and D” when the new campaign begins in August.
“I want to change the way we play this year. I want to play many balls from the back, many balls from the middle,” he told the Advertiser. “I want to give my team more options to damage the opponents.
“I said before to them that I want to do the A, B, C very well, and we’re going to win the league.
“This year, after two months, I said ‘leave the C, leave the B, do a very well A’ because it was too much for some players.
“We did well but next year I want to do A, B, C and D, if we can, because in League One we can play more good football but also more organisation and physical presence.”
That physical presence has been a popular theme for Di Canio over the last six months, and acquiring players who can add weight to his side is one of the Italian’s top concerns over the summer - providing investment in the squad is assured by the club’s backers.
But the Italian is also after players who have the knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Town’s new level.
“For the characteristics we’ve got in our team, the physical presence is not very strong,” he said.
“You can see when you switch off a little bit and you don’t have the fire to play your football, you can see the games like Aldershot – they dominated most of the game physically.
“We need to improve our physical presence and also our experience.
“You try to win in League One and it is more tough so we need more experienced people at 27 or 28 that already have experience in League One.”

Surely this has been sorted already? come on adver if PDC is avaliable then this question must be asked or is this just an old story reprinted because you have no new news?

On another note cheating Drogba is carrying an Olympic torch through Swindon. What a joke , it should be someone connected with STFC like Paolo or Paul Caddis. Instead we have this cheating tw4t.
Thankfully I'll be watching in Royal Wootton Bassett.

I hope that some on here take that on board and start to believe we have to recruit from clubs in League One or above, not League Two. We need to progress and the likes of McEverley just underline that. I am so pleased PdC is no longer vetting players via U-Tube. This next season will be even better than the one just gone. You've just got to love the man and his vision. Class players from above, just love the sound of that.

The clue is that Paolo is talking in a positive way and not in a "maybe" kind of way.

Just a thought but do we really want the board to come out and say yes we are backing Paolo to the tune of x million quid? Surely that puts price up of players we try to sign. We must be a massively attractive proposition to a wide array of players, with our set up and in particular our manager.

Have to agree with Stilloyal, and anyway why is Drogba running the torch when the games are being held here in London, I just cannot see why a Town player has been robbed of the privilege.

But that was about it - and I think it's better that way than having this constant clamour for news and activity.
One of the disadvantages of the internet, and message boards like this in particular, is that it fuels no end of rumour, speculation and misinterpretation of situations. What is happening behind the scenes, is probably a million miles away from most peoples speculative ideas. It is important that financial information is only on a need to know basis, as anything else would make negotiations more difficult. I personally have no reason to distrust Jeremy Wray and the investors, on the other hand, I would be surprised if they give into every one of Paolo's demands. I am, however, happy to wait and see. Many players that we would be interested in are probably still under contract, and those that aren't, are probably sunning themselves in Mexico or Vegas. So patience, and all will be revealed, one way or the other.

Does the (I think) 55% salary cap in League 2 increase in League 1? If not substantially more then I guess we will have to lose a few more such as Kerrouche and Magera before we buy, as the general presumption is we were close to the limit? I shouldn't think the 4 departures so far will have released big money, although Smith may have been on a reasonable whack. Depending on the % of wages we were paying that may also affect if we can sign the loans on permanent deals (McEveley and Holmes)
Also I don't think we will be getting a statement to say the board are releasing x amount for Paolo to spend. Surely that will just alert other clubs to add on a Swindon premium to transfer fees.
Just a word on Drogba. Agreed he's theatrical, but he's not alone there in the world of football. On his day he is unplayable, and that tends to be the big games as he has shown recently. 9 goals in 9 cup finals is not a bad record.

I know it's not been made public knowledge yet but I'm quite certain that the funds Paolo needs are there for him.
However I think that the baord may encourage the manager to be less gung ho and be more cautious in his signings. I.E look at the players you want more carefully before jumping in, no more Clarke's or Tehouhe's.
I'm not at all concerned about Paolo signing a new contract, it WILL happen.

Unfortunately though, Drogba's antics are not that untypical of football nowadays, so I don't really see why he gets singled out as such a villain.

I have tried to find out if paying off contracts counts as wages as far as the cap is concerned. Still not sure.
Just a couple of points -
Does the (I think) 55% salary cap in League 2 increase in League 1?
I suppose the summary is - I know nothing!
On the diving front dare I say that Macca does pretty well. He is excellent at getting his body in between the ball and opponent and then going down when he gets a nudge. In my playing days that was cheating but today....

You are right about the cheats ruining the game, they all p1zz me off TBH. Refs need to get wise to them and the authorities should then hand out severe penalties for conning.
I think the game is too fast for referees these days. With kids or junior soccer in the States they have 2 ref's , one in each half of the pitch and this allows them to keep up with the game. Just an idea.

As for funds, I hope and expect the purse strings will be kept fairly tight. It is well known that the club runs at a loss, even when selling players, and that the new owners intend to run it like a business and not just pour funds in. We've seen how they operate, and I expect it to be the same going forward. This is good, because otherwise the club accumulates debt, which may be 'ok' while the current investors remain interested, but could prove a millstone if they decide to move on.
*
And LR, Sharps?? You must be joking, if we are going to get an experienced centreback in, I hope he'll be a lot better than that. We need a 30-year-old dropping down from the Championship, not one from L2.

When he is back and ready to deal, we will know about it for sure, and my guess next Friday things may start to warm up a bit on transfers, until then, we are all guessing. Its fun, but with little or no substance, pretty much like the article above, all a bit speculative, apart from the fact we are looking to recruit from above and not below, obviously the way to go.

Just because a player is in L2 or Non-League doesn't mean he is a poor player
.
A certain L2 player is on the verge of moving to Man Utd for £4m - yet according to lots on here he is "not good enough" for Swindon as he is from L2!
.
A former hero of our came from the 10th teir of English football and this season hit 17 in the Championship - and has over 50 league goals in under 3 seasons!
.
A bunch of current favourite was snapped up from Non League and helped us to secure the L2 title despite the "step up"
.
The list of talent from "below" across the football leagues is endless with many still plying their trade way above our new "lofty" level of L1
.
Yes we also want to be snapping up talent from around and above as well
.
But when experinced players head downwards - it is usually for a reason!
.
That reason is also 99% of the time the opposite as to why players are heading upwards!

He was also on the list of top 10 players other managers would want - again we only had 2 - the same 2!
.
So yes he must be total sh1te!
.
We have Flint as our long term CB rock - what we want is another old head to make sure Flint or Devera do their job - like Macca does - as we all know they can't play together
.
That way we won't suffer if Macca is out and Sharps would fit that bill perfectly
.
Also being on a free and coming from Shrewsbury shouldn't take up too much of the budget - which is important as we need to spend that elsewhere
.
An extra CB is not number 1 priority so doesn't need us going out splashing excess amounts on that area - save that for the Forwards!

Though my view is very much short term - 1 possibly 2 years tops out of them - while some of our younger players "mature"
.
We all know these are coming to the end of their careers but can usually still add something at the right level - Benson perfect example - I was really pro him yet lots on here were he's too old and not worth £100k
.
Howard could play a job share role with Benson for example and help bring on Bodin et al
.
Granted none will be long term prospects like O'Kane or Pack - but signing a few oldies alongside a few youngsters is surely a good way to get instant and long success
