Bodin delays decision on new deal

Bodin delays decision on new deal Bodin delays decision on new deal

BILLY Bodin will not make a final decision on whether or not to sign a new contract with Swindon Town until after his involvement with Crewe in the League Two play-off final.

The Welsh forward has been offered a two-year deal at the County Ground but he told the Advertiser that he is currently dedicating all his attention to helping his loan club secure a place in League One next season.

Crewe face Cheltenham at Wembley on Sunday and, when that business is taken care of, Bodin said he would take time to consider all his options.

“I’m just going to get Wembley out the way and concentrate on that, then I’ll have a sit down and chat with my dad and with Swindon and talk about it then," he said.

“All I’m thinking about at the moment is playing for Crewe and helping them in the play-offs."

On a personal level, Bodin has enjoyed and endured a somewhat crazy season.

After starting the term in the Swindon first XI, the 20-year-old has since fallen out of favour, spent a successful time at Torquay and briefly forced his way back into Town boss Paolo Di Canio's thinking before being sent to Alex to end the campaign.

Now a trip to the home of English football awaits the Wales Under-21 international at the end of a manic nine months, and Bodin reflected on a whirlwind season.

“It’s not gone the way I expected the season to go and, to be honest, it’s been pretty hectic. But it’s been good for me and I’ve enjoyed it," he said.

“We (Crewe) did get a bit lucky in the last 10 minutes of the second leg at Southend and we managed to get through and now we’re looking forward to Wembley.

“Hopefully I can get my place back in the team and have the chance to play there."

Not too bothered if he signs or not tbh but he does have potential and will earn us money in the transfer market.

Better news is that Captain fantastic has signed a new deal keeping him here until 2014, cheers Cadds.

Persaonally I feel that Billys dad has a real conflict of interest here. That Billy wants to speak with his Dad and the club says they may not have the same interests in mind. His Dad is the club as far as Pauls contract with the cluib would suggest! Perhaps best if he goes ands we take a fee as he will not get 40 games here next year and that is what he wants. He probably wants to bring girl friends home with him sometimes and wont want Dad sitting at the bottom of the stairs!

stfclondon says...
8:58am Mon 21 May 12

There's no conflict of interest at all. Paul is Billy's Dad first, and an STFC employee second. As a young lad it's only natural Billy would want to speak with his family about such things, it's a potentially life-changing decision. I'm sure Paul will say the same as any Dad would - that he will support his lad in whatever he decides to do.

Personally I hope Billy stays with us, after winning the play-off final with Crewe of course. But he might decide that his future lies elsewhere and, if so, I will wish him the very best of luck.

Zippy's role at the club is to develop the youths - Billy is no longer a youth and therefore technically out of his scope - he would not have been asked if a offer should be made or not (unlike Storey and Bedwell)
.
Therefore, in this situation he is only looking at it from a father/son perspective - and having been a professional is a great person for Billy to sek that advise from
.
He has to weigh up staying at a club which is going place at the expense of being a guaranteed first teamer against regular football at a club which may or may not go anywhere - Torquay
.
Will they compete next year if the likes of O'Kane and Ellis go?
.
At only 20 years old I think he should stay put and sign the 2 year deal on offer - as he is still young enough to not need to play every week
.
Also I sure if he was to speak to JW and raise potential concerns over lack of action they would put an agreement in place as JW clearly wants to look after his players best interest - even if that lies away from STFC

Needs to do what's best for his career, if Crewe/Torquay/whoeve
r offer him first team football and that's what he's really after then you can't say fairer than that as a reason for going. He is still young though, another reason why he'd want to discuss it with pa. As LR says Paul's involved in the youth setup and not the first team so can't see an issue there. Hope whatever decision he makes turns out to be the right one for both him and the club, but if he does I can't see how anyone could hold it against him.

Billy needs to be playing first team football regularly. I would like it to be with us but somehow I think he doesn't fit in with PdC. I think he will go and it will be our loss as I think there is a huge amount to come from him. Personally I would like to see far more made of our young players coming through from Zippy - it's the only way you will ever get a Don Rogers or Paul Rideout playing for Swindon in the forseeable future.

I think Bodin wants regular game time and i dont think he will get that with us next season but would do at Torquay and even more so especially now they havent got in the play offs and with the close relationship he has with Ling i wouldnt be surprised if he went there.

Great news on Caddis extending his contract.

I suppose we have to wait now for a while until June until alot of activity on players when contract are officially up.

Billy should be allowed if not encouraged, to act professionally and focus on the job at Crewe. I am sure the club respects that.
I would like to see him stay but I think he will end up at Torquay because he feels wanted there.

Yep, good post stfclondon.
I would also like to see Billy stay, i have a feeling he may want first team football and if i'm honest i believe he will probably have to move on to get that. Whatever is decided like you stfclondon i will wish him the best of luck.

Have we missed a trick here by letting him fall out of contract?

We might get a fee for him as he's under 24 and hence we have developed him. But it's decided by tribunal, but is usually well below what the club values a player at and what they could have negotiated in the market.

So do we want Crewe to win? Arguably Billy would have more chance of first-team football with Crewe in League 2 (although they may want him in League 1 as well).

LionelHutz says...
11:03am Mon 21 May 12

He's only 20. How many centre forwards are first team regulars at that age?

He should sign with us - he might not play every game but he'll be part of a squad that, in my opinion, will be challenging for promotion to the Championship.

London Red says...
11:33am Mon 21 May 12

I don't think we have missed a trick as when players start out you never know how they will do
.
If we simply tied all the youngsters up on long deals we would end up with lots on our books we don't want - Evans, Clark, Siad, Scott and Kennedy alone this year
.
Now he is more established - I think this type of situation is looking to be avoided with the 2 year deal on offer - that way if he continues to make the impact he did this year then we can extend next summer an so on

madterrier says...
11:46am Mon 21 May 12

No-one said tie-up all the youngsters on long-term deals.

I was talking specifically about Billy Bodin and at least giving him a one-year extension when he had broken into the first team earlier this season. He's the only youth player to come through in recent times and it would be sad if all we got for him now is peanuts.

the wizard says...
11:46am Mon 21 May 12

We have not exactly endeared ourselves as a club to him lately have we .
The club could and should have had this sewn up a lot earlier, rather than wait for the contract to expire. Having said we want him to stay then loaning him out during periods when many of us would have preferred the chance of seeing him contribute here is hardly an endorsement . It boils down to the fact that Billy wants a regular berth. He has at least managed the bench with Torquay and Crewe which is more than he has managed here on many an occasion. I think he will go where he feels he can get games as there is no substitute for playing games to gain experience, and whether that is as a winger or forward is irrelevant, its experience and exposure, which is more than he gets here. Both Torquay and Crewe have excellent records with nurturing young players. I wish Billy the very best for his future, but would prefer it to be in a Town shirt. By the way, I do realise that he was sent out on loan to gain experience, but he landed up playing against the same teams as us, so no real benefit at all, as he could have done all of that with us, and surrounded by team mates who could have contributed to his development more so.

Old-Stager, Hilperton says...
12:14pm Mon 21 May 12

Perhaps Billy's lack of enthusiasm to jump at signing for Town may not impress Paolo.
After all James Constable's hesistancy in signing for us, immediately resulted in a withdrawal of a possible offer.
Also Billy shows remarkable loyalty to Crewe Alex, considering he has played about 2 minutes in the Play-Off semi-finals, and may well not even make an appearance at Wembley.
I think that Billy is a very good prospect, and I hope he does eventually sign for Swindon Town, but I did hope that he would have jumped at the chance.

Stilloyal says...
12:30pm Mon 21 May 12

All the player has said is that he doesn't want to think about the contract yet as he wants to concentrate on the P/O final.
There is nothing wrong in that, he's just proving what a good pro he is already. He doesn't want to be distracted.
He may well want to move on after that game , it depends on what other offers are on the table. I doubt very much that Crewe or Torquay could pay him as highly as us , so any decision will be purely football related.
There is no chance that he'd get regular game time for Town next season , so I personally think he'll move on.
I wish him good luck in whatever he decides.

Wilesy says...
12:35pm Mon 21 May 12

if Billy signs I can't see him playing every game here. He's not starting at Crewe either, so I guess he's waiting to see what Torquay do as he played regularly there.

Two options could be -
1) sign him up then send him out on loan for 6 months, probably to a L2 side then review in Jan.
2) swap + cash for Ellis?

A promising player though and I hope his career takes off, whatever happens.

RamsburyRed says...
1:32pm Mon 21 May 12

I don't think he'll be 'guaranteed' a start where-ever he goes and at his age shouldn't expect it. It's a question of where he feels his prospects are best. I don't feel we've treated him especially well, and as others have said he should have been offered an extension earlier in the season, after all, it is clear he has a future in the game. That has been acknowledged not only amongst those for whom talk is cheap (us lot) but by folk such as Wales managers, and the fact that two other clubs have taken him on loan.
*
He is not getting much game time at Crewe, and if he goes to Torquay he is consigned to L2 football, so I hope he will still decide we are the best option. If after a month or two into the season it is clear he is not going to play much, then a loan could be arranged (admittedly this would probably be to a L2 club, somewhat putting him back to square one).

nlorenzo says...

Billy watch out. Crewe are a feeder club to Liverpool, which basically means unless you are good enough to go to Liverpool, their only interest in you is to sell you on. Dario Gradi tried this a few years ago with Sam Parkin, as your dad will know, and Sam saw through him and went to Ipswich. My advice to you is if you have to go go to a solid league 1 side who are interested in developing you as a player. Not to go to the Crewe cattlemarket.

I believe the club will have a position in mind regards Bodin junior - ie clearly would like him to stay - but at the right price and for so many games. This will be Paolo's decision with JW. Bodin senior as an employee will be wise not to get involved in taking another position against the clubs because he has a responsibility to support the decisions of the senior management. Because BB is his son - does he offer advice as his sonm - or as his employer. This to me makes it difficult for PB to be impartial. Of course - it is likely that PB sees it exactly as PdC does in which case I am talking bull - as usual some may say - however - the politics of small businesses with autocratic leaders is something I have some insights into!!!

I wouldn't call STFC a small business. More staff than many realise and a heck of a turn over, and more than a bit rolling in through sponsorship and advertising alone. Turn over in the millions, perhaps you could show them how to make a profit, 'er maybe not ! the last chairman tried that and look where it got us. I think Wray & Co. do a magnificent job, and their determination is to be applauded.

Nope. Nobody's in a rush. I don't see why anybody should be. Our season's only just finished and Bodin's is still going on. The players won't be back in training for another few weeks so we have plenty of time. I'm just delighted that PDC has said he'll be relying less on his visits to YouTube for scouting this time!

Someone tell me please. Where is the benefit of sending a player out on loan if the impact of working under Pdc is so beneficial.
If on loan to Crewe there is disruption in the player's home and social life and normal environment, not to mention travelling time.

nlorenzo says...

As my mate 92 grounds said Bodin is waiting to see if Crewe win the playoffs, and if they do he will go there. Sadly the chances of him lasting there are small as Crewe make their living from buying and selling players. He will just go to the highest offer.
