SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio to go British in transfer market

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio intends to make his Swindon side 80 per cent British after learning his lessons in the transfer market last year.

Town’s Italian manager recruited an international pick and mix of players in June, July and August ahead of his team’s League Two term.

Many of those acquisitions, such as defender Alberto Comazzi, striker Lukas Magera and goalkeeper Mattia Lanzano, failed to settle in England and were consequently sent abroad before Di Canio opted to reinforce his squad with players born and bred in the UK.

The Robins boss has conceded he made several mistakes when formulating his transfer strategy this time last year, errors he is determined to cut out as he prepares Swindon to take on League One next season.

“I’ve learnt, absolutely, that I can say approximately 80 per cent of the squad must be British – that’s for sure,” he told the Advertiser.

“You can bring three or four foreigners but they must be fantastic quality, have desire and be strong men because they have to integrate themselves in a way with this football, which is completely different to the football around Europe.

“Everybody knows if I send Magera there, if I send Comazzi to Italy, if I push out Lanzano – it is no coincidence that most of the players I have involved since the beginning.

“They didn’t integrate themselves very well in the social life in English football.

“It’s no coincidence that six or seven of 10 were foreigners.”

Di Canio also said he would examine the character and background of potential signings a little deeper this summer.

He sad: “I learn a lot, absolutely, and I learn also that I can’t watch some clips and say ‘he is a good player, good skill’.

“You look at a record and it’s six months there, six months there – there is always a reason. I am not at a top level where I can investigate why there were six months there. You have to believe people.

“He is a free agent, doesn’t cost money to the club, only wages, but we made many mistakes because we didn’t know exactly the player and we had to only pray and believe that everything would be okay with their mentality.

“Most of the time I was wrong and we were wrong because we didn’t know them but we don’t want to make the same mistake.”

Completely agree with PdC here. Its fine to have your fancy footed players when you're in the top division. But when you're in Leagues 1 & 2 you need good old fashioned home grown players who are willing to put their foot in and be strong. League 1 here we come!!!

Think the article makes it clear that Lanzano, Magera and Kerrouche will be looked to be moved on
.
The 6 months here 6 month there section has to be Kerrouche and it looks like PdC has seen why
.
Gabilando, Smith and Scott are certain not to be offered new deals
.
Kennedy less certain but unlikely
.
So that is 7 out and I'm sure Esajas will be moved on too taking total out to 8

The reason Paolo is so good is that he is so self critical and willing to learn from his mistakes. He has had a wonderful start to his managerial career and it looks like he is going to get better and better. I'm sure he will be with us next season - his word is too important to him and his inner pride. I'd like him to stick around a while longer though to benefit from his early fierce hunger as a manager. It's great to have a sense of optimism once more.

Great to hear Paolo has admitted his mistakes and is learning fast,he's a rookie manager and there will be many more mistakes, but what a great start he's made!the signings he makes now, will determine if we can push for another promotion challenge, wages are a big stumbling block as we move up the leagues,Sheff Utd fan I know, told me Ched Evans was on £20,000k a week!that's the kind of wages you have to pay for a top Striker that bangs in the goals!(madness)

if you want some transfer news just head over to the sky sports website... they seem to link us with a different player every few days! haha - first o'kane at torquay, then michalik at carlisle and latest is andy williams at yeovil.

haven't seen much of the latter 2 but williams scored a fair few goals last year. i think him and michalik would be free transfers, and with o'kane's reported release clause, that could be 3 decent players for a small cost! add in holmes and mcevely (maybe bostock on loan), and ship out a few of the players who didn't cut it this year, and that for me is the making of a decent squad.

YateleyRed - just because a player is currently in L2 doesn't mean he is a L2 player
.
If that was the case there would never be any upward transfers and only Premiership Youngster would make it in the Premiership
.
Norwich and Southampton have show that buy buying up the best from the league you have just left is an excellent way of progressing upwards

Well said. It is so refreshing to hear a Manager admit he has made mistakes, especially one who has had such a difficult time due to his past. I so hope he will remain with us for a long time as it has been a very long time since the County Ground has felt so strongly about a Board and Manager.

As the County Ground ever felt so strongly about a manager and board. After forced relegations, administrations, relegations I have had my passion for the Town driven to a level most unexpected.

It's always mattered, still baffles my wife that when in the throes of love I booked a weekend away to Lisbon the day we won promotion at Walsall. "Sorry love but between four and six o clock I'll be with you but looking at my phone as this will ruin my whole weekend if we don't get promoted". I had three of my closest mates text me score updates that day. All chosen because I know how important football is to them and they wouldn't spoof me the scores. But still 3 just in case one got way layed.

Still to this day she doesn't understand how I could have said it would have ruined my whole weekend. I haven't had the heart to tell her it would have been worse, ruined my whole year!

This board and this manager in particular have been extraordinary. Long way to go to complete the mission but I've never been more confident as you all know!

To a point I agree, but their two key players Holt and Lambert didn't come from the division below, and without their goals those sides would not have enjoyed such success.

With these teams I don't think its necessarily where the players have come from, massive credit has to go to Adkins and Paul Lambert who have got the very best out of them, much like Paolo has done at Swindon.

Also particularly Southampton have a fantastic youth system which has helped massively in generating players and £££.

Still think we need our own Holt and Lambert to shine in League 1, interesting to see if Williams at Yeovil is the answer, if we get him can Paolo work his magic and convert his 17 goals last season into 30 goals this season?

As someone has already said i have never seen such positive comments about a Town manager as we all do about Paolo and i know this has been said so many times but i think we all like to see passion, committment and desire as fans and Paolo gives us that as well as being an astute and clever manager.
What a contrast to our friends down the road who if i take you all back were mocking our club for taking Paolo on as manager and wre happy they had Wilder. Well how the tables have turned the Yellows want Wilder out and our prize assett Paolo has got us promoted and
tunrned this club around and consider that to where we were when he arrived last summer- what a contrast and quite rightly as well Mr Wray deserves all the praise from the fans as well for supporting the manager.
I feel with the revolution that is happenning at our club there will be alot of L1 players who wil want to be part of what is happenning here and i believe our squad for the start of the season will be a contender for a top 6 place if not even higher.

Onwards and upwards and more exciting times to come with Paolo at the helm.

Wilsey - Not trying to take anything away from Adkins or Lambert
.
I was simply pointing out that signing players like Pack and O'Kane could be a good move based on the success those guys had doing the same thing
.
However - your examples actually back up my point rather than disprove it
.
Holt was actually signed from Shrewsbury - So Norwich took a punt on a top L2 striker
.
Lambert OK came from within the Division as Saints took the 2nd best striker in L1 from the previous year and added him to thier squad (the best had already gone to WBA the Championship)
.
Lambert however was also poached from L2 (Rochdale) by Rovers - so again was from the lower leagues rather than taking players from higher up
.
So if rumours over Midson and Williams are true we would be doing a very similar thing to those guys

It's a good point LR. However, the trick is to pick the right ones - and I think there is some luck involved in that. You can never be sure how a player is going to handle playing at a higher level. We don't even know how some of our existing players are going to cope next season, let alone anyone else's. I know you will say we are going to be playing in a poor division, which is true - but it's still better than the one we've just left. It's quite possible for players to be comfortable in the 4th tier but struggle to establish themselves in the 3rd.

.
Does PdC have it? We haven't really had a chance to see yet - but possibly will soon!
.
All signings though have an element of risk - be it ability, character, culture, inability to keep your c0ck in your pants etc
.
No one ever gets it 100% right - but as long as the "hit" rate goes up / remains high that is all you can ask for
.
I saw an interview with Adkins recently and he said how players character would be assessed as he didn't want his group disrupted
.
I fully believe PdC has always wanted this but learn't he needs to improve on that more - so no repeats of Clarke, Kerrouche, Montano or Tehoue will occur
.
I'm excied by this summer as I really think we will see a lot fewer come in than some are expecting - but those will be all top quality to really drive us forward - like out Jan signings onwards did

LR you're right, my thinking was that Lambert came from Rovers (same level) and Holt although actually from Shrewsbury (you're right again) was previously at Forest so although transferred in from the lower level was clearly playing below his level as he had surprisingly transferred down two divisions.

You can't be that much of a fan - I would have packed her off on the plane and said, "Enjoy yourself, I'm going to the game!"..... ;o)
I understand where you are coming from Mitted but, as a wife and a cricket widow - you have to live with us for a long time................

. Good job we are both STFC fans though!
My wife isn't a footie fan but she would have been amazed if I didn't do as I suggest! She knows her place - what a good girl she is!!! I am very blessed.

For me the names which stand out are apart from McEveley and Holmes are:
.
Quinn - Cardiff
Hreidarsson and Clingan - Cov
Sonko and Scotland - Ipswich
McCann - Posh
Jaidi and connelly - Saints
.
All CB, DM or CF - the 3 key positions we need to add to

How about Juan Pablo Angel? Or even Michael Owen, he wants to play for football and not money so he should be happy with 600 bucks p/w

If you think ANYONE would be happy with James at town then I think you are sadly & badly mistaken. He's had an horrific season and lived up to his name of Calamity James time and again, so no thank you.
As for Owen he said today that he will NOT drop below Premiership level because in HIS opinion he is still good enough for that level.

So we can safely cross those two off the shopping list.

P.S James is interested in a player / coach role , we already have a top keeper coach.

Definitely don't want Calamity, apart from the fact he's passed his best he could be a really disruptive influence. Some of those being released at Championship level really provide food for thought though, would definitely be happy with a handful of those.
