9:32am Wednesday 16th May 2012 in Sport
TEAM Bath’s Guy Landon took victory in the 33-mile trail race at the Marlborough Downs Challenge on Saturday.
Hundreds of competitors took part in the the contest as well as the 20-mile trail race, and it was Landon that triumphed in the former in a time of four hours, 19 minutes and 53 seconds.
The first woman home was Corry Ravenscroft, who finished in five hours, three minutes and three seconds.
The 20-mile trail race was won by Chris Wilson of Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers in an impressive time of one hour, 54 minutes and 56 seconds.
Westbury Harriers’ Emma D'Alton took the women’s prize in a time of two hours, 19 minutes and 31 seconds.
Most of the routes on the Marlborough Downs Challenge races are off-road along footpaths and bridleways such as the White Horse Trail, the Wansdyke and the Wessex Ridgeway.
The routes, which start at Marlborough College, take in many local landmarks including the Kennet and Avon Canal, Cherhill Monument and Avebury Stone Circle before finishing at Marlborough Leisure Centre.
Marlborough Running Club chairman and organiser Andrew Richardson was delighted with how the event had gone.
He said: “It was another very successful day and great to see so many smiling faces at the finish, particularly after an arduous 33-mile run.
“The weather was perfect for the runners, especially after all the rain that's fallen in the past month, and many of those taking part commented on the fantastic scenery around the course.”
Marlborough Running Club meets at the Leisure Centre at 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and new members are very welcome.
