SWINDON TOWN: Czech-ing back in?

Lukas Magera Lukas Magera

PAOLO Di Canio will offer Lukas Magera the chance to resurrect his career at the County Ground, but only if he shows the desire to make a success of himself at Swindon Town.

The Czech striker is currently on loan to Banik Ostrava having endured a difficult start to his career in English football, which only yielded one goal in 15 appearances.

Magera has played nine times during his loan spell, scoring once, but Di Canio will welcome him back to his squad for the assault on League One if he wants to return.

“We will have to see what he wants to do, but he scored his first goal for them a few days ago after nine matches, but he has been playing in the midfield,” said Di Canio.

“If he is happy there in his home town we can sort out the situation with his contract, but if he wants to come back then I will train him again.

“I do not cut my nose to spite my face, because I am a manager, so if he wants to come back he is welcome.”

But while the Italian will welcome the giant striker back into the squad, he warned him getting into the team may prove tougher.

“It is obvious if I have 26 players here I can not use 26 every week, so I will choose my players every week.

“In this moment I will integrate him with the group because they are paid by Swindon, but this season it was difficult because there is a priority in life which was to win.

“I need to leave out bad apples, it is not an insult, but it can happen in some moment that lazy people do not work in training and force other people to train badly.

“The quality must be better, and I am right.”

Please do NOT bring him back, his lack of application was infuriating at least. Look at the photo caption and that is how a lot of people saw him jumping for a header, with his head shrinking back into shoulders, instead of stretching his neck. Need a performance today to finish off the season properly.

Fair call, Toshman, but how telling is it that Banik have been playing him in midfield this season? He just doesn't live up to the 'big centre-forward' tag, which I think is what has frustrated many Town fans. Can't see him in the Simon Ferry role, myself, but hey you never know!

I'm confused by the last paragraph - is PdC talking generally or about Magera?
.
I was under the impression his effort and work rate etc was never in doubt - he was just finding it difficult to settle - like Risser did in 2011
.
I remember Gary Rose saying that if you could combine Kerrouches talent with Magera attitude you would have a great player
.
I'm definitely with Tosh and think he is quality. His ball control, his range of passing, his hold up play the ability to create something out of nothing etc has shown there is quality in him
.
The main issue is people like comments above say he is 6'5 so should be Crouch!
.
That's not his game - thus he is in midfield while back in Czech not an out and out target man
.
Lots also ignore the fact at Barnet in the league we got drawn into Long ball 2nd half and Benson won nothing - yet not one moan!
.
I'm not moaning at him just pointing out hoof up top ALWAYS favours the CB - thus Flint wins 99%
.
Also people forget how much a pre-season has on a season and Magera didn't have one
.
I don't just mean a PdC one but one at all - the add in injuries at the start and that meant he was always playing catch up
.
So a decent pre-season will help
.
Now we have Benson and we play differently we could bring him in and see him make a decent impact
.
The main thing I take from the article is he was signed as a starter but will now be a squad player - PdC wants to know will he be happy with that or would he like to stay back in Czech as a starter?
.
I would be happy with Benson, Magera, Connell, Bodin and one new real poacher as our forwards for next season

With the greatest respect if this isn't the proverbial non story I dont know what is. Choose any out of team player and you could say he might come back, he might not.

Braindown says...

For the umpteenth time, Magera is an attacking midfielder by trade, he only played is an occasional supportive role up front for his former clubs, never as an out and out striker.

His best performance in a Town shirt? Wigan at home when he came on - as an attacking midfielder/deep lying forward.

His goal away at Port Vale? Scored when running from deep midfield to latch onto a loose ball just outside the box.

Until we stop pushing this 'Striker' and 'Target Man' theme the sooner we'll realise that we have a clever, good passing midfielder on our hands.

"The Czech striker is currently on loan to Banik Ostrava"..... perhaps someone needs to tell PDC that Magera isn't a striker!

I don't know whether it's laziness, lack of desire or sheer lack of ability to scrap for the cause, but I have never seen enough commitment from Magera to justify his inclusion. PDC has made it clear that only wholehearted effort will do. That's why Magera was shipped out. I see it exactly the same way as PDC does. If Magera comes back and brings a different game with him, we might have a decent player on our hands. But whether he actually has that game - or the desire to acquire it - is surely open to question. And it seems to be the question PDC is asking.

Pdc may see something in him??????
He reminded me a bit like ray Clarke who we signed from Spurs.Real big old fashioned striker, yet at the CG he was like a tub of lard.
Yet moved on to Mansfield and scored mega goals. Then to Holland again scoring mega goals, he even got some kind of award from the Dutch Fl.
So who know's Magera just might come right and he is still being paid by the Town.
Would be great for the club and player if all worked out.
I do remember seeing Ray Clarkes goals on TV and wondered why he slipped through the net.

Redgollum says...

It depends whether he really wants to come back. If so, he ain't the striker we need, but could be a Chris Kamara type in midfield.

Disagree, that set of strikers will not get us out of Div 1. We need 2 quality strikers. It is the main area we need strengthening in plus one central midfielder.
Connell not an out and out goalscorer.
Benson has yet to cut it in Div 1 but could be useful.
Bodin not ready. Not set Div 2 alight.
The rest not good enough.

If we get these 3 signings right them we should challenge a top 7 finish of course my opinion from what I see each week.

Right off we go to Bradford.

Loyalty to be admired with that selection, but with the exception of Magera who has not shown enough, for me this would only be a decent set of forwards for League 2, but let's be honest, I can't see them setting League 1 on fire. Even our best striker by a mile, Benson, has not proven himself at League 1 yet. PDC said previously strikers are on the radar, I hope so.

It does all depends on who the main scorer is
.
If we have one main man who scores 25-30 then we can have others coming in and out scoring 10 odd like Kerrouche, Connell etc this year
.
Especially as we have players like Ritchie contributing double figures
.
Also depends on how streamline they want the squad if they want a tighter 23-24 man squad then probably best to cut loose all fringe players like Kennedy or Cibo, Gabi, Esajas, Kerrouche and Magera to free up space for the players we really need

tbh I never saw anything in Magera. 6ft 5ins and when he jumped he was 6ft! The only bloke I've ever seen who stands tallet than he jumps. I thought he would be certain to be shipped out in the close season. Obviously Paolo still sees something in his game. Maybe he thinks he could be groomed for the mid-field role? I thought we tended to be a little light in that area. Not sure how he'd cope with the physical side of the game though.

I still expect us to have a big squad for next season though with Paolo making changes every week depending on who we're playing

Agree Duke. Load of tosh to think we will challenge with that set of strikers.

Benson is the best we have and probably the only one inked in, and as you say he hasn't done it yet in L1 but he is fired up with a point to prove. I would like to keep Bodin for the potential but then I think we have to be looking for at least two more strikers if we're going to push at the top.

Stilloyal says...

I agree with the striker issue, only Benno of the ones playing at the latter end of the season is good enough. Benno has the skill and intelligence that the others don't
Magera is good enough to play behind a front two but not as the target man, he has great skill and vision.
Kerrouche has the ability but not the desire.
If Paolo can knock these latter two into shape I believe we could get shot of all other strikers except Benno and add two more.
If Magers and Kerrouche don't cut it then we will need three strikers to add to Benno and push on for promotion.

.
If we get one as good as Parkin, Cox or Austin that will be enough with the others supporting
.
Why - due to our defence and midfield!
.
We never had a real goalscorer all season this year but walked the league
.
With 26 clean sheets you only need 26 goals to win 78 points!
.
I guess it is a different storey if people want Benson relegated to the bench - I don't - he got 10 in 30 for Charlton in L1 which is the equivalent of 15 over a full season - that is enough as the 2nd striker - its more than Paynter got when Cox was here!

Top post Duke, totally agree, anyone who has watched Lucas can see this is not where he fits in.

Intelligent and skilful he may be in the eyes of some, but not in a manner befitting L1 and L2.

As for the rest, you only have to look at the circumstances surrounding Benson, the League One champions decided he was not up to their desired standard, and went on with others they considered to be better. I like Benson, but I stand by the fact that it is grossly unfair to rely on a player at his age, and relative fitness to go the whole season, and as more or less the main stay in attack, simply will not happen.

If people are going to correctly judge Magera on his suitability and having him played as a mid fielder then we should not be looking at goals scored but the number of assists he has made, and that will reveal more about what he has or hasn't been up to in an attacking role.

If he has headed the ball already the caption shows nothing like that. In fact it more likely shows that he has used his neck muscles to head the ball.

At the start of the season, it seems to me, certain Town fans choose a player and get on their case.

Pericard last season, possibly deserved but was he ever given a chance ?

Paynter two/three seasons ago but proved them wrong.

Magera this season !

I have seen good things in his play and things he could improve on but if Paolo is looking to give him a chance that should be good enough.
