GOLF: Annie's an ace

OXFORDSHIRE county captain Annie Gowing scored a hole-in-one on her way to a matchplay win at the English women’s senior championship at Tidworth Garrison.

The Frilford Heath player, who was playing in the second flight, made short work of the 168-yard par three 11th hole, where she used her 24-degree rescue club to play through the wind.

“It was a wonderful shot,” laughed Annie, who admitted to a degree of local knowledge.

“I used to play for Wiltshire and I do know this course,” she said.

Gowing started her golf at Wrag Barn in Wiltshire and played for the county before moving to Oxfordshire.

This was her second hole-in-one, having previously scored one at Frilford Heath, also on the 11th hole on the Red course.

On this occasion her ace helped her beat Burhill’s Debbie Richards 6/5 and make her way into the quarter finals of the second flight.

Her run ended there when she was beaten 4/3 by Karen Lobb (Northamptonshire County).
