TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE SPRING CUP: Westwood into cup final

1:00pm Monday 16th April 2012

BEN Cowdrey’s Westwood Social Club upset the formbook to claim their place in this season’s EJ Shanley & Son-sponsored Spring Cup Final by beating Bratton Reserves 2-1.

Bratton, who had not lost to Westwood this season, went into the game on the back of five straight victories and in a confident mood that they would be making the Meadow Lane final.

But Westwood had other ideas and they raised they game to claim what was a deserved victory.

Nick Gleeson scored for Westwood with well struck free kick, Richard Wyatt restored parity for Bratton who really should have been trailing at the break as Westwood twice missed from the penalty spot.

Tom Downes saw his first effort saved by keeper Ryan Williams but he was given a second chance when it was ordered to be retaken, Downes never troubled Williams with his second attempt which sailed yards over the bar.

In what was a tight but entertaining second half Westwood’s winner came from an own goal, keeper Martin Cowdrey launched a massive punt up field which resulted in Bratton’s Kevin Balchin scoring past his own keeper with a finish that any striker would have been proud of.

Westbury Town 5 United FC 2

THERE was no fairytale return to Meadow Lane for last season’s beaten finalists United FC, who suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of cup favourites Westbury Town.

Town faced a few anxious moments in the game as United were in the game at 2-1 and 3-2 before Westbury’s ran out convincing winners.

Scott Walford put Westbury in front only for Robin Walker to level for United. Daryl Maxwell regained the lead for Westbury before half time and when Ian Gray put them 3-1 up in the second half it looked as if they would cruise to victory.

That wasn’t the case as United hit back with Lukasz Bareja but although United had chances to level it was Westbury who scored the all-important next goal when Walford bagged his second of the game to wrap up a deserved win.

Walford completed his hat-trick with his third of the afternoon and Westbury’s fifth.
