WEMBLEY 2012: Di Canio silences pre-season doubters

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

THERE have probably not been too many managerial appointments that split opinion as much Paolo Di Canio’s did at Swindon back in May.

Within hours of being becoming the 31st manager to take the reins at the County Ground, the football world was discussing the wisdom of Di Canio’s appointment.

Some saw it as inspired, with his passion and drive ideal to help lift a side still hurting from relegation. But many thought it foolish to give such responsibility to a person known for his erratic temperament as a player.

Plenty predicted it would all end in tears within a matter of months – a view only enhanced by Swindon’s poor start to the season. But, 10 months on from when he first arrived in Wiltshire, it is fair to say he has surpassed all expectations.

Not only has Di Canio crafted a side firmly on course for automatic promotion but he also oversaw Town enjoy one of their best FA Cup runs for years and, tomorrow, he will lead his side out at Wembley for the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Di Canio, a self-proclaimed workaholic, has given plenty to the Swindon cause this season, but tomorrow’s game will be just as much for himself as it will be for the club.

“For me obviously it will be very important,” he explained. “It is the first time as a professional in football to have the chance to go to Wembley.

“It’s unbelievable that in my first year as a manager I will be taking a team to challenge for a trophy in the best stadium in the world that has the most tradition. It is amazing.

“The only cup we could realistically win this season was always going to be the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and it is an amazing moment for me obviously, to have played a part in taking this team to the final.”

Di Canio will be forgiven for feeling a little envious of his players tomorrow, with the chance to play on the Wembley turf in a competitive fixture having eluded him during his own playing days.

“It is a big satisfaction for me to know that my players were capable to reach the final,” he continued.

“It is a big chance for them to play on a stage that I hope they can do every year, but it is not easy. In reality it maybe happens only once in a player’s career.

“But the fact they are so young and already have this chance to play for this trophy, is very important. It is a moment they have to enjoy and to savour.”

Almost a year ago to the date that Town will be walking out at Wembley, they had slumped to defeat at then League One leaders Brighton to push them that bit closer to an inevitable relegation.

It is perhaps testament to just how much good the board, players and management have done this season that that moment feels like a lifetime ago.

“Tomorrow will be an important moment for the club because the mood here was so low in the summer after what happened last season,” said Di Canio. “You can imagine that after dropping to League Two, fans may begin to worry about what might happen.

“A team can disappear because another bad season means you risk going out of the Football League and lots of people can lose their jobs.

“So the fact that we not only saved the season in terms of where we are in the league, but we can also go to the final of a competition and win something is a good moment for everyone involved with this club who are working hard every day.

“It will be a very important day for the fans because the day at Wembley can help them to forget what they felt last season, and they can go to London full of hope to celebrate something in a day they can enjoy with their families and all Swindon supporters.”

There will certainly be a sizeable contingent of Di Canio’s family and friends in attendance, with the Town boss having had to purchase well over a 100 tickets for those back in Italy desperate to be a part of the day.

But one special guest will be experiencing it all from possibly the best seat in the entire stadium.

Swindon Town’s tea man Curly Withers – who has worked in the background at the County Ground for over three decades, will travel with Di Canio to Wembley and also sit on the bench with his technical staff.

“Curly will come with us,” said Di Canio. “He will sit behind the bench with us. It is a day for us all to celebrate together and he deserves the experience.

“He works so hard to make sure everything always runs smoothly, so I am very happy to have people like Curly.

“He is like a symbol of Swindon Town and he is a part of the team.”

On a day that will be just as much about Di Canio as it will Swindon, it perhaps sums up the Italian that he can still take time to think about those whose work behind the scenes goes largely unnoticed.

It is one aspect of Di Canio's character that has helped endear him to the fans, and it is a characteristic that means win or lose tomorrow, fans will still be chanting his name.

In early August last year in a conversation with some Scousers (Everton supporters, so not glory hunters), their comments about Di Canio's appointment were negative in the extreme. My retort was that, not only would the season reflect that of the Lou Macari record breaking promotion winning season, but Swindon Town would be promoted as worthy champions...I wish I was a betting man, because what odds would I have got back then? The JPT final was not on my radar, but Wembley tomorrow is going to be the impetus for the final run in to a memorable and historic season.

This guy is an absolute LEGEND. Well done Curly for your years of service and enjoy your day, as for PDC this guy thinks of everyone before himself, so hard to find someone like this in football nowadays. Swindon is again full of Pride, Passion, Desire and Belief, god I am so excited, can't wait for tomorrow. COME ON YOU REDS.

Paolo i love you, my blood is football and to see a manager with the same passion and drive i have just makes me realise how amazing the club of STFC is and how amazing the game of football is. good luck on Sunday MIGHTY robins. wish i was back in time D I CAAAANIO !!!!! The plaudits should be shared with the board. PDC came in and made huge, potentially disastrous mistakes.
The rash of useless signings from Lazano to Esajas and Gabilondo meant we were only going South. They all had 2 year plus contracts to boot.
Luckily Devera and Da Vita were already earmarked and when PDC realised his **** up he was supported.
This for me was crucial.
He was allowed to make mistakes and showed he can learn from them. He was supported again by the board when he took on Leon Clarke.
The signing of Wes and the move of Mac to centre back proved a catalyst and it has been upwards ever since.
So........well done indeed PDC, a brilliant managerial start. But well done the board as well. Many would have panicked and not allowed a foreign 'rookie' to learn from mistakes and we would all have been so much the poorer as a result.
Whatever happens tomorrow, it has been an amazing ride.

I thought it was such a bad signing I had £50 @ 20/1 after the burton game, then £30 @ 22/1 after the Macclesfield game and told everyone to put your money on us walking the league,
Even had a cheeky £10 @ 7/4 after I won £16 on de foe scoring the last goal at club am away,

I have never felt more proud to be a Swindon fan. When I was growing up and attending matches, something bad seemed to happen on/off the pitch every week, including administration twice. Finally we have got our act together, had the guts to appoint a rookie manager with passion, have seen that the JPT is worthwhile, financially and for the team as a unit. Tomorrow I will have a smile on my face at the end of the day regardless of the result. Thank you to Di Canio and the squad of 2011-2012 for all that you have done for fans this season! (Though I would definitely like that Champions trophy!)

I hold my hand up, I was one of those who thought, oh oh, the national press could have a field day with us this season. And they have - for the right reasons!

The first game against Crewe showed a lot of promise though, and even against Southampton there were still signs that PDC had the guts to stick to his principles. It didn't help having a certain Lee Holmes pull our defenders out of position most of the night!

Can't afford to make it tomorrow, but will celebrate like everybody if all goes to plan on the big day. Still enjoying thinking of Tuesday night when we bounced back to form against 'Turkey'. If that had been a poor result then the run-in would now be looking a bit like Danny Wilson's play-off season. It's all falling into place already for next season!

Saw Curly after the Torquay game and he told me then..he was absolutely skipping along (which is no mean feat at his age) and beaming from ear to ear.
..
He said he had politely turned di Canio down but Paolo just wouldn't hear of it and insisted and then demanded that he join the bench!

All fine here - 2 boys are REALLY excited and ready for the big day..chenged plans and going by coach instead of train due to a cancellation and the line closure .. Found out that we're on the Cheltenham Town F.C. 1st team coach!?..travelling in style..well, or so I'm told.
SAP, Good luck with the mortgage, and I'll look forward to you buying me that pint haha. Hope there is no extra time tomorrow , we all need to get back down here to really celebrate. Kammy says 2-1 to Town aet I hope the first half of his prediction is good.
loyal, Not totally sure, but I believe there is no extra time, it goes straight to penalties if score is levbel at 90 mins.
Hi Old Town - I didn't think there was like the earlier rounds but it was clearly stated in a mjor football write-up that Extra Time is played in the Final - seems strange to change a format but better that penalties aren't immediate
Thanks for clarifying that Sap

Good news there! .. Now we need at least 1 draw from the following today - 3 or 4 would be a true signal from Pappa Ignacio di Canio that we are destined for the double! -- The Gas v Southend Creepies v Rovvers Morecambe v Shrews Torquay v Port Vale -- Chelt v Yellow Bellies doesn't matter any more from the league point of view but hope that Cheltenham get back on track and give them a good hiding.
Southend and Shrews drawing, Torquay losing...shame about Creepies up 2-0

ing work is taking place on the Bakerloo line between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone, and on the London Overground network between Euston and Watford Junction on Sunday 25th March 2012. Swindon supporters arriving at Paddington travelling to the match at Wembley Stadium are advised to use eastbound Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City or Circle line services to Baker Street, and change there for Northbound Jubilee or Metropolitan line services to Wembley Park station.
Any good pubs for fans from M4 thru Hammersmith to Euston/Marylebone Road into Laandon.Or Wembley ish?

Just read this thread with tears in my eyes.

Sooooooo Proud to be a Town fan.

Enjoyed every minute from the Open Day back in July to the present time. Best season ever for me, and I have been following Town since 1970.

It would be great to win tomorrow but I am going enjoy the day regardless.

My wife and daughters are unbearable with excitement, but isn't this what it is all about :-)

My eldest daughter (her first Wembley experience) has made masks of players for tomorrow so if you see Caddis, Devera, Fods, Ritchie etc walking about before the game you will know who it is.

Well it's only the top 4 that count now. The 4 below us can fight for play off places but I think Crewe will easily catch the pox in the next couple of games.

Guys - best way to Wembley not this.

Instead head to Marylebone Station instead of Baker Street. It's a few hundred yards to the West, but from there you can catch the overground (Chiltern Line) to Wembley Stadium stadium. Takes just 8 minutes. Then it's just a quarter of a mile to the stadium and the Green Man pub. Much smarter move than going up the slow Bakerloo tube line from Baker Street and then a longer walk.

Trust me - I live in London, and this is the smart route I always take and will be doing tomorrow.
