WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: Long hails display
9:00am Thursday 15th March 2012 in Sport
BOSS Wayne Long was left purring at the quality of his Wroughton side’s display, after they beat Ludgershall Sports 3-1 in the Premier Division.
Adam Jones put his side ahead a couple of minutes in as he ran onto a ball over the top and slotted under the keeper.
After the referee waved away Wroughton appeals for a penalty following a challenge on Dean Hughes, the same man converted a scrappy goal from close range.
Hughes headed a second goal moments into the second period and although Ludgershall got one back later on, the result was never in doubt.
Long said: “We dominated from start to finish. It was probably some of the best football we’ve played all season.
“We kept the ball for long periods and in the centre of midfield Gary Bromage was outstanding, they were chasing shadows in the middle.”
Sanford exacted revenge for their cup defeat by edging out AFC Bradford 1-0, thanks to a Brad Gill second-half header. Sanford’s result took them above their rivals to the top of the division Chippenham Youth kept the pressure on the top two with a crushing 4-1 win at Southbrook.
Shane Blackmore, Alex Bell, Mark Nolan, Alastair Ellis were on target and boss Dave Ferris said: “Overall I think 4-1 was a fair result. We had enough chances to win by more.
“It was a very good performance considering we had a lot of young lads out there on the day.”
Calne Town suffered a shock 5-0 defeat at home at the hands of Blyskawica, while Moredon and Vale of Pewsey shared a 1-1 draw.
Marlborough were knocked out of the Corsham Print Senior KO Cup quarter-finals after losing 2-1 at Amesbury Town, while in the Fountain Trophies Junior KO Cup semis, Old Town beat Wroughton 2-1.
Box Rovers saw their hopes of Wiltshire Junior Cup glory ended as Stockton & Codford won their semi final 2-1. Ben Moore scored Box’s goal.
