MELKSHAM Town Reserves are the new Division One leaders after their 1-0 win over Castle Combe, who travelled to the Conigre looking to build on recent cup wins over North Bradley and Westbury United Reserves.

Combe were also keen on avenging their 6-3 loss from the end of September, but they came up just short in game that they deserved to get something from.

With Trowbridge Wanderers without a game, Melksham knew that a victory for them would take them to the top of the table.

And although they got what they were after they were pushed all the way by a Combe side who were unable to recover after Lee Fielding had scored in the first half for the hosts.

Broughton Gifford 0 Westbury United Reserves 7

WITH no win in eight games, Broughton Gifford find themselves struggling at the foot of the table.

The villagers' latest defeat came at home to Westbury United Reserves who, having won the reverse 4-3, took maximum points again courtesy of a 7-0 win that leaves their hosts four points from safety with just three games to play.

After last week's 3-0 Knockout Cup win over Trowbridge Wanderers, Pete Ayton’s Westbury side may have been fearful that their trip to Broughton could have been a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show.

But once again they were on top form to run out easy winners after Paul Beavers had set them on their way.

Ashley Easton’s penalty made it 2-0 and goals from Marc Lanfear and Pete Ayton who also rattled the woodwork with a rasping strike put the visitors in complete control at half time.

Dan Cox bagged himself a double and a second from Ashley Easton made up Westbury’s seven which keeps them in the hunt for a top two finish.

Freshford United 1 Semington Magpies 2

AFTER seven weeks without any football, Semington Magpies returned to action with a visit to Brown’s Park.

And although they had not kicked a ball for so long they claimed the result of the day with a 2-1 win over their hosts Freshford United, whose title hopes may have suffered a blow.

With games in hand on the sides above them they remain in the race for silverware, but the defeat will be seen as an upset as they would have been expecting maximum points from their ring-rusty guests.

Magpies took the lead when Kelvin Lockwood scored from the penalty spot after Dan Rimmer had been brought down.

Chris Arnold doubled Semington’s lead with his first ever goal in senior football when he volleyed home from 12 yards out from a Dan Rimmer cross.

Freshford halved the deficit prior to half time when Andy Donald scored from the penalty spot and although they put Semington under pressure in the second half, they were unable to break down their guests for a second time.

Steeple Ashton 0 Seend United 4

TWO weeks after a Guy Rowley goal earned Steeple Ashton a 1-0 win at Seend United, the sides met in the reverse fixture at St Mary’s with the hosts looking for another victory in their battle to beat the drop.

Seend, on the back of last week's stunning 9-0 triumph over Broughton Gifford, picked up the spoils as they avenged their previous loss thanks to a 4-0 win. After a goalless first half Seend made the important breakthrough when Ollie Gee fashioned an opening to put his team in front.

Mike Hopkins scored to make it 2-0 and a second from Hopkins looked to have killed Ashton off, but they were given a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty.

But Guy Rowley’s spot kick being saved by Seend keeper Dwaine Perry.

Alex Fell added the fourth for the winners who are now heading to the top half of the table while Ashton look to be heading out of the division.

Referee Paul Knowles, who took charge of the game at the last minute, received special praise for his handling of the game.
