RUGBY: Calne 81 Cricklade 3
3:30pm Tuesday 8th February 2011 in Sport
CALNE had an emotional start to the afternoon with a minutes silence as a mark of respect for second row Danny Witts, who lost his mother earlier in the week.
The home side ran in 13 tries in their victory, despite giving up the first points of the match to a penalty.
However, the hosts’ pack worked their way upfield and scrum-half Mike McCaffrey’s delivery set up the chance for wing Alan Milton to go over in the corner.
Almost immediately from the restart Bruce Harper and Dave Evans linked and centre Tim Brain went over for his first of two tries in quick succession.
McCafferty converted once and Milton was continuing to prove unstoppable, going over for three more tries in the first half, all converted by returning fly-half Andrew Donegan.
Captain Alan Wicks started the second-half scoring, with the support of props McCafferty and Peter Brownlie, Donegan adding the extras.
Calne brought on Adam Welch on the wing Mike Smith at fly-half and veteran Micky Dyer in the front row.
Welsh made an impact with two tries, which he also converted.
Debutant centre Simon Hansen went 80 metres down the pitch before scoring, Donnegan converting.
Then Adam Baker was on the receiving end of some lovely hands by returning full back Keith Bradley, giving the winger space to get a score of his own.
The final try of the game was deservedly taken by Witts.
