GIRLS FOOTBALL: GIRLS from secondary schools across the North Wiltshire district took part in a football tournament last week in an attempt to qualify for the Wiltshire youth games.
The eight secondary schools in the district were taking part in the North Wilts girls football district festival.
Each school entered teams in three age group categories, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s and then participated in a round robin tournament to determine the winner.
Sports development officer for North Wilts, Steve Silk said: "It was a fantastic day and it is evident that the standard of girls football has risen hugely in the last 12 months."
Winners of the under 12s were John Bentley school, Calne and runners up were Bradon Forest school, Purton.
The under 14s category was won by Malmesbury School and the runners up were John Bentley school.
Chippenham schools, Sheldon and Abbeyfield, as well as Wootten Bassett school all qualified in the under 16s age group. The winners and runners up of the event will go on to compete in the Wiltshire youth games at Bath University on July 9.
This event is organised by the Institute of Sport and aimed at promoting the value of sport to young people.
Ten different sports are played by youngsters between the ages of seven and sixteen including children with special educational needs.
