TOOLSTATION LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Point gives Calne comfort

CALNE Town joint-boss Tommy Dryden hopes his side have “stopped the rot” as they halted a run of four straight defeats with a 1-1 draw against Wellington on Saturday.

An equaliser just two minutes from time denied Calne all three points after young defender Nathan Loader had given them the lead but Dryden was pleased with a draw.

“It’s a shame to concede a goal late on but hopefully we’ve stopped the rot now,” he said. “We had been on a bad run and at the end of the day, a point is much better than a loss so we’re pleased.

“We had a chat in training with the lads about what they needed to do differently and everyone played well and did their job.

“We played some good football and we kept our shape really well - it was a good performance.

“We had a strong line-up and if we can keep a settled side from now on then we can do well this season.”

Midway through the first-half Calne took the lead.

Top scorer Daniel King floated a ball into the area from a set-piece and Loader was on hand at the back post, stooping low to head home.

Calne looked as if they would hang on before the visitors stunned them with a late equaliser.

A cross was knocked across the box and a low volley from the left-hand side that rocketed onto the inside of the post and in.

“When you’re at the bottom of the league, you never seem to get any luck and it was as if every knock down and every bounce was falling their favour,” said Dryden.

“The goal was one of those moments – a shot that could have ended up going out for a throw-in but the lad couldn’t have hit it any sweeter.

“Maybe we could have closed it down better but we were happy with the result.”
