The North Wilts Golf Club, founded in 1890 and one of Wiltshire’s oldest clubs has achieved a unique double in providing the current County President for both the men’s and lady’s governing bodies.
It is believed that this is not only an historical first for Wiltshire but also for the South Western Counties.
The club has the distinction of being one of the first in the country to be awarded the nationally recognised Golf Mark accreditation marking it out as a supporter of junior and beginner golf.
Malcolm Nixon a member of the North Wilts club for 30 years, its captain in 1996 and a past Wiltshire captain is now President of the Wiltshire Golf Union. As President, Malcolm is the link between the 26 affiliated clubs and its 11,000 golfing members.
He is very honoured to have been elected President and looks forward to a full term of office visiting not only the Wiltshire Clubs but also meeting with officials and players from other counties. His term of office is for two years. Malcolm farmed in the Devizes area for 28 years and is as well known locally as he is on the national golf scene.
Phoebe Lumley a stalwart of member of North Wilts Golf Club since 1956 and lady’s captain on two occasions was appointed President of the Wiltshire Ladies County Golf Association in 2009. Having been captain of the County in 1972 Phoebe is well known as an administrator within Wiltshire golfing circles.
Her passion for the game was shared with her late husband John who was also Club Captain in 1961. Phoebe has just returned from supporting the County Match Week held in Bristol in which lady golfers competed from the six South West counties.
John Spiller, Chairman of the North Wilts Club said ‘He was immensely proud of the appointments of Malcolm and Phoebe, not only are they wonderful supporters of their home club but they embodied everything that was good about the game of golf.
The level of administrative involvement at County level by members of the club demonstrated the commitment to County Golf; and receiving the Golf Mark accreditation was testament to the clubs policy of encouraging youngsters to take up the game’
