Westbury & UB 3, Wootton Bassett 5

Hockey: Bassett extended their Avon League winning streak to four games on Saturday with an away win at Westbury-on-Trym.

Bassett struggled to find their game in the opening encounters as the surprisingly slow pitch proved to be a great leveller.

However, they settled in towards the middle of the first half and began an assault on Westbury’s goal.

Kyle Barnes went close on numerous occasions, but couldn’t find his usual clinical finishing.

Eventually captain Dan Stanley stepped up to fire home the opener.

Five minutes later Matt Edgar broke through and made it two with a brilliantly taken goal.

Bassett then decided to make a game of it and, once again, relinquished their lead, conceding two goals from short corners before the break.

A stern half time team talk from Stanley had the desired affect as Bassett hit twice, early in the second half.

The first was created by a brilliant run from man of the match centre back Ali Wood who squared the ball for Barnes to provide the finishing touch. Wood then struck home Bassett’s fourth from a short corner to regain their two goal cushion.

However, Westbury lifted their game and hit Bassett again to reduce the lead to one goal but the home side’s revival was short lived and Stanley finally put the game beyond doubt when he skilfully played the ball into the goal off the ‘keepers foot.

The win sees Bassett jump three places to seventh in the Avon League. Next week they play host to high flying City of Bath, 1pm at Lime Kiln.
