League and cup joy for super Westlecot

Bowls: Players from this part of the county won three titles at the Wiltshire Bowls Association Men's Competitions finals staged at Chippenham Town on Sunday.

But they could not stop Wiltshire's top club Swindon Westlecot from a team double - Four Rink League and Tourist Trophy.

Hosts Chippenham Town failed to make home advantage pay and lost to the Swindon club in a closely fought Four Rink League final in the morning by nine shots when going down 76-67.

And after lunch Westlecot completed the double with a 12 shot victory in the Tourist Trophy, double rinks competition, brushing aside Rodbourne Cheney 50-38.

In the five individual finals contested Westinghouse won the Over 60s Triples, Kevin Farrar (Spencer Moulton) was victorious in the Two Wood Singles and Mark Ashcroft (Cooper Avon) reigned supreme in the Unbadged Singles final.

Devizes' Alan Burnhope lost out to Wootton Bassett's Dave Snell in the Champion of Champions while Westinghouse's Stewart Allison was beaten by Roy Carter (Rodbourne Cheney) in the Greenkeepers' Singles.

Chippenham Town put up a spirited challenge in the Four Rink League final but could not stop Westlecot successfully defending the title and clocking-up their sixth win in the last seven finals.

The hosts took the honours on only one of the four rinks - Neil Connor skipping the successful quartet to victory.

Westlecot flew out of the traps and across the board led 22-10 at five ends despite Connor leading 8-0.

Chippenham fought back and reduced the gap to 32-29 at ten ends and had drawn level at 49-49 at 15 ends, but then the holders just edged clear to finally win by nine shots (76-67).
