Pewsey retain men's tennis title

Tennis: The Pewsey A team of Martin Wright, Jon Gregory, Neil Guthrie & Rob Guthrie has regained the Men's Division 1 title in the Swindon & District Tennis League.

The 2006 champions were runners-up to Ramsbury A last year, but a 7-1 victory over Wootton Bassett A moved them out of reach of all their rivals with two matches still to play.

At the bottom of the division, Highworth A kept their survival hopes alive with a 4-4 draw against third-placed Swindon A, with Fred Wells & Murray Chapman winning all four sets.

In Division 4, Purton B completed an impressive season with the same four players - Malcolm Gayfer, Glen L'Estrange, Marc Cox & Dan Cozens - featuring in every one of their twelve victories from 12 matches.

In the ladies' section, an under-strength Ramsbury A crashed 7-1 to Ashton Keynes A, to lose their first match of the season.

They now need to beat bottom-placed Chiseldon A in their last match to make certain of taking the title from second-placed Swindon A, the reigning champions.

David Lloyd A, newly-entered into the league this year, has won the Division 3 title for the loss of just fourteen sets and one point.

The Swindon-based team with a squad of six players - Iryada Ashmore, Louise Crawford, Charlie Foster, Liz Price, Lucinda Procter & Sylvie Ritchie-Haven - beat Nalgo 7-1 to move seven points clear of Purton B who will finish in the runners-up spot.

In the mixed section, Division 1 leaders Ramsbury A were held to a 4-4 draw by Purton A but need only one set in their final match against second-placed Pewsey A to take the title.

Reigning champions Swindon A were held to a 4-4 draw by Chiseldon A, but still have a good chance to take the runners-up spot if Pewsey lose to Ramsbury.

The Division 2 title has gone to Highworth A, thanks to a 6-2 victory over long-time leaders Ashton Keynes A who take the second promotion place. Unbeaten Purton B has won the Division 3 title, with Pewsey D in second place.
