Tennis: Brave Anna Hawkins' Wimbledon dream is over for another year after her first round doubles defeat at the hands of Nathalie Dechy and French Open finalist Casey Dellacqua.
Wildcard winners Hawkins and British partner Anna Fitzpatrick lost 6-1, 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon on court ten.
The 23-year-old from Devizes was disappointed by the defeat but was glad to be back at Wimbledon after a three-year absence.
She said: "Deep down I knew it was going to be tough but I'm disappointed with the result.
"Me and Anna worked so hard, not just during the match but over the last few months.
"It's still a dream come to true to play there, the atmosphere was great. Wimbledon is unique, it has so much history and tradition."
Despite the lop-sided result the British pair felt they competed throughout.
Hawkins said: "We didn't do the basics well whereas they did. There are no free points at this level.
"If we had taken our chances the score would have been closer. They are a tough pair and we'll definitely be keeping an eye on them and see how they get on."
Looking forward the British duo are discussing whether to continue as doubles partners.
Hawkins will net £2,625 for making the first round, which will help support her playing career.
She said: "The money always helps, travelling to tournaments can get expensive. But Wimbledon is more than about the money."
Providing support in the stands was Hawkins' family.
Mum Hillary said: "Anna has had a good year and worked really hard.
"It was a tough draw and on the day they were beaten by a better pair. Anna was very disappointed after the game but I'm really proud of her."
