NEW Swindon Town Ladies boss Dan Jones says he plans to shake up the club’s structure during his tenure after turning down interest elsewhere to take the reins.

Swindon parted company with Leonie Wade this summer after enduring a dismal season in National League Southern Division, where they lost all 22 of their contests scoring eight and conceding 119 times.

Their rock-bottom finish in the league standings has seen them return to South West Division One where Jones is looking to rebuild from their relegation.

Jones, who cut his teeth managing in Men’s Sunday League as well as Portsmouth Ladies, had all but agreed to join another side for this season but says the temptation to link up with Town was too great to turn down.

“I was due to join another club actually, but a chance meeting with the Swindon club secretary meant a change of heart and direction for me,” said Jones.

“After arranging an interview and speaking with the chairman, I knew I wanted the job.

“Working for a club like Swindon Town doesn’t come along very often and once I learned of the possibility of becoming the new Ladies manager, I was very keen to discuss things.

“I came into the club fairly late in the summer in the big scheme, so I’ve had to really work and plan as I’ve gone on.

“Obviously last season’s results are there for all to see, but I’ve come into the club and given everyone a clean slate to start from, a fresh impetus and we aren’t dwelling on last season.”

With less than two weeks between Jones and his first competitive match as Town Ladies boss, Jones says he is looking forward to developing his younger players over the course of the season.

Town have been handed home advantage for their first game on Saturday, August 18 when Southampton Saints & Girls travel to Fairford.

“My aim is to win football matches,” he added.

“I don’t want to put any more pressure on the players than needed, so I’m not going to say that we are aiming to win this or that.

“The initial aim is to get off to a good start in the league and from there the possibilities are limitless.

“I’m confident that I have a group of players that can take this club forward, and that’s the biggest aim for now.

“The squad is young, exciting and full of potential.

“We have some really talented youngsters in the squad this season and they’ve really worked hard in training and during pre-season matches alongside the more senior players to prove themselves to be ready for the Women’s National League.”
