CHIPPENHAM Town manager Mark Collier believes Saturday’s 3-0 pre-season win at Melksham Town served a purpose, although he’s warned his men against any possible early complacency.

Carnell Chambers, Josh Smile and Billy Gleed were on target for Chippenham as Collier’s troops put three past Kieran Baggs’ side to record their third pre-season win on the spin.

It was also Chippenham’s third clean sheet in a row, having denied Football League sides Newport County and Swindon Town prior to their Melksham success.

And while the positive early signs are there, Collier admits complacency cannot begin to creep into the thoughts of his players’ heads.

He said: “We’ve had three clean sheets and that’s a positive for us. The goalkeeper doesn’t want to concede, the back four don’t want to be responsible and the midfield don’t want to allow runs to be developed.

“Winning football matches breathes confidence, but we have to remember it’s only pre-season.

“We’ve got bigger fish to fry come the start of the season.”

Despite the three-goal win, Collier admitted elements of his side’s game can still improve.

The Chippenham boss will field two trialists for Tuesday night’s trip to Cirencester Town, while players currently lacking match fitness can be expected to start at the Corinium Stadium.

He added: “There are a couple that are behind because they’ve missed training or picked up some knocks.

“We’re trying to get a little bit more game time into them.

“The reason we were pleased to get Cirencester in pre-season was because of the possibility of playing on a 3G pitch early in the season. It hasn’t worked out that way, but it will do us no harm.”

Meanwhile, chances being created up front is one positive that Collier was keen to highlight.

The Bluebirds’ strength on both wings again shone through against Melksham, something which the Chippenham boss knows will be key to any success this season.

He said: “I was disappointed with the second half to be honest, but the first 45 minutes was up there. We played some decent football and created some very good chances.

“The game served a purpose and did the job.

“We got more minutes into our players, some have had 75 minutes now and other 90. We’re continuing our same theme with the possibility of a couple more trialists at Cirencester on Tuesday.”
