JASON Doyle’s British Grand Prix campaign at the Principality Stadium on Saturday night ended prematurely when the Swindon Robins asset crashed spectacularly in his final qualifying ride.

The current world champion went tumbling to the shale after clipping the back wheel of wildcard Robert Lambert, who dived underneath Doyle to take second place.

But the move prompted Doyle to hit the deck, and he was immediately taken to hospital after being knocked unconscious following the crash.

Fortunately, scans revealed only minor fractures for the 2017 SGB Premiership title winner – and he was released from hospital on Sunday.

Doyle’s final race was always going to be his last, though, after a poor start to the meeting meant the Aussie recorded only three points from his first four rides.

A battle with Danish icon Nicki Pedersen ended in Doyle picking up third in his opening ride before the Aussie led his second ride, only to be passed by eventual winner Bartosz Zmarzlik and Prezemyslaw Pawlicki.

A last place behind Tai Woffinden, Patryk Dudek and Chris Holder in his third race meant Doyle required two heat wins if he was to realistically reach the semi-finals.

His hopes were dashed in heat 14 when Speedway of Nations winner Artem Laguta beat Freddie Lindgren, while Doyle could only hold off Emil Sayfutdinov to finish third.

The 32-year-old’s night then ended following the collision with Lambert, which the Brit was excluded for.

The meeting was won by Polish youngster Zmarzlik, who defied the relentless challenge of home favourite Woffinden in the final to earn his first GP win of the year and put his quest to earn a world championship medal back on track.

Meanwhile, Woffinden’s podium finish was his fourth this year. The 27-year-old has already established a 20-point lead at the top of the world championship standings, and his case for a third world title was boosted when main rival Lindgren failed to reach the semi-final stage – scoring just seven points.

The series now moves to Malilla, Sweden, in three weeks’ time. It remains unclear if Doyle is likely to participate in that event.
