WILTSHIRE golfer Jordan Smith looks set to miss the cut at The Open after dropping to five-over par following a two-over second round of 73 today.

Although the score is an improvement on Smith’s first round 74 on Thursday, it leaves the Bowood player outside the top 100 on leaderboard at present and well short of the projected cutline at two-over.

The 25-year-old is making his debut at The Open at Carnoustie, but seems likely to be restricted to just two rounds.

Derry Hill’s Smith got his round off to a perfect start this morning after a birdie three at the first hole.

However, that was as good as it got and after a run of four successive pars, a bogey six at the long sixth hole saw him back to level par for the day, and there has no further improvement before he reached the turn.

Smith began to drop down the leaderboard early into his back nine after successive bogeys at holes 11 and 12.

However, he showed supreme character to battle back with two birdies in a row at the 13th and 14th to return to level par for the day.

Smith could not turn that into a charge towards the clubhouse and after three further pars, his hopes of clawing back inside the cutline were dashed by a double bogey six at the final hole to drop him to five-over overall.
