CHIPPENHAM Town boss Mark Collier believes experience within his squad is benefitting the club’s younger players, following their comfortable two-goal win against Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

Nick McCootie and Dean Evans were on target for the Bluebirds as Collier’s men ran out comfortable winners to record a second pre-season win.

It’s been a good start for Collier’s troops, who on Saturday downed another Football League outfit when beating Newport County by a goal to nil thanks to Jack Compton’s second half strike.

While encouraged, the promising start is of little importance to Collier – who underlined that pre-season results count for nothing come the start of the league season.

He said: “The good thing is we’ve had two decent games against league opposition and we’ve done okay.

“We’re pleased with the way we’ve gone about our business, and the application of the players has been absolutely spot on.

“We’ve taken it from the training ground and out onto the pitch, and Swindon had some experienced players out there.

“It was the same with Newport, they had a strong side out – especially in the first half – and we’ve gone toe-to-toe with them.

“We’re pleased, but we know this is just the start. We’ve got a couple of little injuries that we need to rest to recuperate before we go again but all I’m interested in is August 4.

“We can win all of our friendlies and then lose the first five league matches, then the pressure is on.”

Chippenham’s games against both Newport and Swindon have prompted some loan thoughts within the Collier’s head.

Last year, Chippenham were boosted by the addition of Scott Twine – who joined the Bluebirds on loan before returning to the County Ground in March.

And he admitted he was tempted by several of Swindon Town’s youngsters following Tuesday’s win, adding Swindon went on record to say that they want their youngsters to feature at Hardenhuish Park.

He said: “I’m looking all the time, every club that we play against I will be looking at their players and making notes.

“We got three or four men from Bath because I liked what I saw last year.

“You don’t get everybody, but Swindon Town have gone on record to us and said they want players to come to this club.

“Scott Twine did particularly well for us, I’m glad he’s doing what he is doing because he deserves it.

“We’ve noted a few tonight, but we’ll only take them if we believe they can improve us. There’s no point in them coming only to not play.

“You want the younger ones playing and not sitting in the stands.”

Chippenham are next in action away at Melksham Town on Saturday (3pm).
