MELKSHAM boss Kieran Baggs applauded the mentality of his side’s first pre-season performance against Swindon Town at the infiLED Arena on Saturday.

Baggs’ troops scored twice as Melksham suffered a 5-2 loss in blistering temperatures with the game being switched to an 11.30am kick-off to accommodate fans wanting to watch England play their World Cup quarter final match.

Gary Higdon – who scored a penalty on 15 minutes – and debutant Neikell Plummer were on target for the home side, who displayed sparks of creativity despite their Football League opposition.

The game also presented Baggs with the opportunity to field several trialists and two young teenagers in his side as he continues to plot the best path for his troops ahead of their debut Southern League West campaign.

Baggs said: “It was a great chance for the Melksham fans to see our new signings, particularly on a day like Saturday where it was really hot. That made drinks breaks during the game really important.

“I was delighted with the new signings, they’ve really impressed me. And I know where we are physically with our fitness levels, I’m happy with overall fitness levels.

“One or two maybe have to do a little bit extra, but that will be monitored going into next week.

“We passed the ball around well at times and on another day we maybe could have snuck a few more goals.

“Towards the end of the second half we wanted to get as many players out with 24 in the squad, and it was the same for Swindon.

“It was a good workout for my team and they will be back in training on Tuesday and Thursday ahead of Bristol Rovers.”

With the likes of Swindon boss Phil Brown, assistant Neil McDonald and Academy boss Alan McLoughlin all watching on, Baggs admitted a few of his younger players were hit by a few nerves ahead of kick-off.

But the Melksham manager continues to be impressed by his side’s approach to the new season following two weeks of fitness testing and match preparation.

“Everyone has come back in with a good attitude,” said Baggs.

“We’ve had two weeks of fitness testing, now it’s about match fitness and getting ready for the first game of the season.

“I think you could tell their was some pressure felt among the younger lads at the end.

“We gave or three young teenagers their chance to play against Swindon Town, and it was their first chance of playing for Melksham.

“There are going to be butterflies and a few nerves, but I don’t think anyone did themselves a disservice.

“Gary Higdon is always going to score goals against opposition like this.

“I was pleased to see Omar Simpson and Neikell Plummer do well in their first games.”

Melksham are next in action at home against Bristol Rovers at the infiLED Arena on Saturday, July 14.
