SWINDON Town manager Phil Brown has tied down young defender Joe Romanski to the club but concedes negotiations over new deals for their other out-of-contract players may not be resolved until after their pre-season training programme has started next week.

Romanski was one of six players who were out of contract at the end of last season to be offered fresh terms for the 2018-19 campaign, although only Matt Taylor had previously re-signed at the Energy Check County Ground.

However, after being handed his first-team debut by Brown at the back end of last season, Romanski will remain at Town after putting pen to paper on his first professional contract yesterday.

Romanski told the club's official website: “It is a big deal and this was always the main priority.

“I’m glad that the gaffer has stayed because it is evident that he believes in my ability as much as I do, and he sets a platform for me to go out, work hard and become a better player.”

Last month, defender Matt Preston turned down the chance to stay at Town by opting to sign for former Swindon boss David Flitcroft at Mansfield Town, while midfielder Amine Linganzi revealed earlier this month that he would not be returning due to family reasons.

Goalkeeper Stuart Moore and defender Ryan McGivern are the remaining players to be offered a new deal by the club.

Brown says discussions remain an ongoing process and the Town boss is not concerned by the delay to resolving the futures of several members of the squad, who are due to report back in for pre-season on Monday.

“We are still talking to the players. It is ongoing and it will probably remain that way for the next week or so,” said Brown.

“When the contracts are out there, you understand negotiations are about waiting and playing that game.”

Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux has been afforded an extra week’s break at the start of pre-season following his return from a loan stint with League of Ireland side Waterford.

Once Vigouroux returns, Brown hopes that sparks a positive decision from Moore in order to create a competitive goalkeeping environment.

“Lawrence Vigouroux comes back in from Ireland on July 1. He has an extra week off because he didn’t finish until June 1, so his season was a lot longer than ours,” said Brown.

“He will come back in and create a little bit of competition for the goalkeeping jersey in terms of first choice, and hopefully that will get Stuart Moore moving in regards to his contract.

“I am very hopeful that certainly Stuart Moore will be on board next year. Whether the same applies where Ryan McGivern is concerned, I don’t know.”
