WILTSHIRE'S bid for inter-county championship glory at South West Week is back on course after they beat Cornwall and Gloucestershire suffered a defeat to Somerset at Cumberwell Park Golf Club today.

Wiltshire got off to a commanding start in the singles at the Bradford on Avon club, winning five of the eight matches contested and only suffering one defeat.

Reigning county champion Tom Law was the most convincing winner, beating Aaron Stephens 6&4, with Joe Retford powering to a 5&4 success over Jack Irwin.

James Cooper and Tom Stagg both won their matches 3&1 against Joe Cruse and Matt Richards, while Dom Baverstock-Seaman beat Richard Jasper one up.

Joe Reynard was the only Cornwall player to triumph, beating Simon Futcher 1-up, while Wiltshire duo Garry Slade and Max Drayton both halved their matches against Rob MacGregor and Sandy Kirton.

The hosts then closed out a 9-5 success as they shared the afternoon foursomes 3-3.

Wrag Barn's Max Drayton and county champion Tom Law, from Broome Manor led the way with a 6&5 triumph over Irwin and Kirton.

Slade and Cumberwell's James Cooper and Marlborough's Dom Baverstock-Seaman and Bowood's Jamie Cooper secured halves.

Wiltshire conclude the week by facing Somerset, who edged leaders Gloucestershire 8-6, tomorrow.
