ROYAL Wootton Bassett’s faultless start to the WEPL Wiltshire campaign continued this weekend with a 67-run win over Corsham which lifted them to the top of the table.

Skipper Darren Beasant has seen his troops make a storming start to the season, with five wins out of five so far.

This week, Bassett were at home to Corsham, who won the toss and opted to put Beasant’s men in to bat first.

After dragging themselves to a total of 162-9, the Wootton Bassett chief says Mark Lazenby deserves a special mention as his four-wicket haul helped dispatch the visitors for 95.

“We were uncomfortable having to go in and bat first. The weather has been a bit horrible, so it was never going to be a day for the batters,” he said.

“Groundsmen all over the county have been working really hard. We knew that we would be put in to bat if we lost the toss and that is what happened.

“We had to fight really hard to get to 162, in those conditions we thought if we were disciplined with the ball then we would be okay.

“Mark has been outstanding over the last few weeks. He played second team cricket for many years and in the last few months he’s improved out of sight.

“Credit to him, Mark’s bowling has come on leaps and bounds in the last 18 months and now he is a very skilful bowler.

“Akash Sharma struggled for whatever reason and we needed someone to step up and say they’d do it today, it was great to see someone who has worked so hard get the rewards.”

Elsewhere, it was a successful day for Chippenham, they completed a two-wicket win over Purton, while Devizes saw off Alex Kill’s Swindon by four wickets at home.

Marshfield were comfortably beaten by Warminster they lost by five-wickets, however, it was a different outcome for Marlborough, they won by 88 runs at home to Calne.

All of the local sides return to action next at the weekend as Royal Wootton Bassett battle it out with local rivals Swindon.

Calne, who are yet to win a game, play host to fellow strugglers Corsham - they have only won once in the first five games.

Chippenham, who have tasted defeat once this year welcome Devizes.

Marshfield travel to Purton, while Marlborough tackle in-form Warminster.
