CHIPPENHAM went top of the WEPL Wiltshire table on Saturday after defeating Calne by six wickets.

Steve Silk’s men remain unbeaten and lead the way having secured 63 points from their first three league matches.

Their latest win wasn’t as simple as the result may read though as Calne cruised to 155-3 as Pavraj Lochab (77) starred with the bat while Sean Adams (28) and Daniel Knight (45) helped the visitors’ cause.

But a poor performance from Calne’s bottom six batsmen, who scored just 20 between them, saw Sean Adams’ men crash to 200 all out from less than 47 overs.

Peter Sykes (eight) and Ralph Hardwick put on 52 for the first wicket before Hardwick (104) quickly advanced to his first century of the campaign.

Adeesha Nanayakkara (63) also played well before Silk and Paul Bates combined to hit the winning runs.

A pleased Silk said: “It was a convincing win in terms of the run chase, we were probably a little under-par for our first 25 overs of bowling.

“We didn’t quite get it right and we gave them chances, which enabled Pavraj Lochab to score a few runs.

“But the overs after that were particularly good, we did well.”

Silk pinned Chippenham’s success with the ball in the latter half of Calne’s innings to regular spell changes.

“They couldn’t get away, and we didn’t let them,” added Silk.

“They nudged over four an over at one point, but at no point did they run away with it.

“We kept making changes to the bowling, and it had a positive impact.

“We had a couple of run-outs, Jerron John is a dangerous player and he took a single but got run-out by a direct hit. That certainly helped.”

Despite earning their third win on the spin, Silk urged his men to remain focused ahead of Saturday’s crunch match at Warminster.

Both teams enter this weekend undefeated, and Silk is all too aware of the threat this week’s opponents present.

He said: “It feels like we’re going through friendlies at the moment.

“Because we didn’t play any friendlies we’re only just getting into it.

“But we have a big game against Warminster on Saturday, it will be tough game.

“They’re a good strong side, we know they have the ability to perform well.”

Elsewhere in the division, Devizes slipped to a five-wicket loss at home to Royal Wootton Bassett.

Ashanka Vithanage (5-27) returned with impressive figures while Akash Sharma (3-32) also impressed.

In reply, Jordan Butler (37 not out) scored highest for Bassett as they remained in touch with Chippenham at the top of the division.

Meanwhile, Corsham 2nd recorded their first win after chasing down Marlborough’s target of 175 with just one wicket to spare.

A poor start for Marlborough saw them crash to 10-3.

Though Nick Crabbe’s unbeaten half-century guided the home side past 100, Marlborough were bowled out for 175.

Liam Sumison (56 not out) and Luke Draper (10*) proved the match-winners for Corsham as their last wicket partnership of 21 earned the visitors an unlikely win.

Marshfield also won and moved up to fourth after beating Swindon by 67 runs.

Calum Burnstone’s century guided Marshfield to 201 all out before Lachlan Tyler, Tom Clist, Cameron Walker, Calum Burnstone and Matt Cox shared the wickets to bowl Swindon out for 134.
