SWINDON Robins commercial manager Lee Kilby successfully completed the 74-mile walk from Perry Barr to the Abbey Stadium, raising thousands for injured rider Mitchell Davey in the process.

Prior to last night’s meeting against Wolverhampton Wolves, Kilby had raised £8,000 for the Aussie – who was into intensive care following a crash at Birmingham during Brummies’ Knockout Cup clash against Mildenhall Fen Tigers.

News of Kilby’s arrival at the Abbey Stadium following his 20-hour walk brought a welcome smile to Davey.

And Kilby said knowing where the cash was going spurred him on to complete the final leg of the journey.

He said: “Because of why I was doing it and because it was so well supported, it gave me the confidence to make to make it superb.

“My legs are tired.

“I started to get a bit of an ache in the feet when I got past Stratford-upon-Avon, and there was a long way to go at that point.

“The last part was painful.

“There’s a big hill coming into Highworth, and that hurt.

“I don’t think I’ve walked so slow in my life.

“But once I knew where I was going (onto the Blunsdon Road) I picked up a bit, I knew the finish line was in sight.”

Kilby’s idea to complete the walk sprung to his mind the day after Davey’s crash.

The extent of the 28-year-old’s injuries means he will miss the rest of the season and possibly longer.

“The morning after his crash we found out how bad it was, and we knew he wasn’t going to be back on the bike this year,” said Kilby, who completed the walk in a Robins race suit.

“My mind started racing – I had Birmingham on the Wednesday and Swindon on the Thursday, it was the perfect mix.

“It all fell into place.”
