PLAYER-coach Aaron Nell is taking nothing for granted as Swindon Wildcats aim to finish the job in the Autumn Trophy final second leg this evening.

Nell’s men hold a two-goal aggregate lead over Basingstoke Bison after defeating the NIHL South One winners 3-1 away from home exactly a week ago.

But the 28-year-old has warned his side the job is only half done as the club prepares for their biggest weekend of the season.

Nell said: “Basingstoke are top of the league, and they beat us at home this season. We’ve put ourselves in a good position, but there’s little point worrying about the aggregate score. Ultimately, if Basingstoke win the game, they’ll run us close.”

Nell’s men also have to prepare to face Streatham in the quarter-finals of the NIHL play-offs this weekend, travelling to the capital on Saturday night before hosting the second leg at the Link Centre on Sunday.

The Cats haven’t trained much during February and March due to a busy schedule, but Nell believes team sessions aren’t as important now as they were at the start of the season.

“We haven’t trained as much as we would’ve wanted to because of the amount of games we’ve played,” said Nell.

“The boys have had a rest and we returned to the ice on Thursday night to prep for this weekend. Training is important, but for me it’s not so much now as it was in October at the start of the season.

“We’ve got three games in as many nights. It will be tough but it’s part of our job.

“We’ve played a lot of games this year and we’re used to it. If you want to be successful you’ve got to play a lot.”
