STRIKER Kaiyne Woolery felt a big burden had been lifted off his shoulders after he made a goal-scoring start for Swindon Town against Exeter City on Saturday.

Woolery became Town’s 11th summer signing at the start of the week after completing a £350,000 move from Wigan Athletic and immediately began to repay some of that fee with a second-half equaliser against the Grecians.

Woolery’s strike 10 minutes after the break saw him pounce on a teasing through ball to cancel out Liam McAlinden’s first-half opener.

The 22-year-old had a carbon-copy chance to double his tally midway through the second period and although he was unable to convert that time, Woolery was pleased to make an instant impact.

“It is a big relief. That’s what I came here to do, to score,” said Woolery.

“I am disappointed we didn’t get all three points as we could have nicked it at the end but obviously I am happy to get my first goal.

“Anyone would enjoy a goal but to score in front of the home fans on my debut was a big relief.

“I thought it was a good performance in the second half, I thought there was a lot more energy.

“The boys knew we were behind and we didn’t want to let the fans down so everyone pulled together in the end.

“We should have maybe got another goal. I should have scored another one, I know that, but we are still unbeaten anyway so it’s a positive.”

Woolery had to wait until the second half to run out in Town colours for the first time after starting the contest on the bench.

Having seen few competitive minutes during pre-season, Woolery admits he is still playing catch-up with his fitness so had no problems with having to bide his time.

“I think getting 45 minutes was about right,” said Woolery.

“I haven’t really played in about three weeks so I don’t want to jump into a game being unfit and maybe let the team down or get injured as well. I thought the gaffer made the right decision.

“When I was at Wigan, the gaffer didn’t want me to get injured so I wasn’t playing and it affected my pre-season, meaning any club I went to, I wouldn’t be fit.

“I am happy that I have signed here now and I can finally get some minutes.”
