SWINDON Town have made their second signing of the summer with the addition of midfielder James Dunne on a free transfer.

Dunne has spent the last season-and-a-half at League Two rivals Cambridge United and has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the County Ground.

The 27-year-old’s arrival follows Thursday’s recruitment of defender Chris Robertson, who also signed on a free transfer to become David Flitcroft’s first new signing for the club.

Speaking to Town’s official website, Dunne said that Flitcroft’s desire to win promotion back to League One at the first attempt in 2017-18 is what convinced him to head to Wiltshire.

“I’m delighted to have signed,” said Dunne.

“I spoke to the gaffer last week and what he plans to do with the club is what attracted me here, so I’m glad to get it over the line.

“Having played against the gaffer’s teams quite a bit and knowing how he wants to get out of this league was the main attraction for me.

“I’ve played at The County Ground quite a few times, I’ve played when it’s been rocking so I’m looking forward to playing here.

“Hopefully we can win the games, get the crowd behind us and get promotion.”

Dunne began his career at Premier League giants Arsenal but was released by the Gunners in 2009 without a first-team appearance to his name.

He joined Exeter City ahead of the 2009-10 season and would spend three years at St James Park, making 127 appearances for the Grecians and scoring seven goals.

Dunne has since had stints at Stevenage and Portsmouth as well as loan spells with St Johnstone in Scotland and Dagenham & Redbridge.

He joined Cambridge in January 2016 and made 61 appearances for the U’s in his 18 months at the club, scoring twice.
