SWINDON Town goalkeeper Will Henry has missed out on a place in the England U19 squad for next month’s European Championships in Georgia.

The 18-year-old stopper, who has made nine first-team appearances for Town so far in his fledgling career, was included in an initial 23-man group ahead of the tournament, travelling to Spain for a training camp earlier this month as head coach Keith Downing put his troops through their paces in some final preparation work.

However, Henry will not be involved in the competition, with Downing selecting Aaron Ramsdale and Nathan Trott, from Premier League sides AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United respectively, as the two goalkeepers in his final 18-man party.

Following his inclusion in the initial training squad at the start of the month, Henry told the Advertiser of his pride at having the chance to pull on a Three Lions jersey.

He said: “It’s a fantastic honour to represent your country.

“To be picked in an elite squad list is quite an achievement and something I really wouldn’t have expected this early in my career.”

Henry, who turns 19 on Saturday, made his Town debut during the back-end of the 2015-16 season, memorably saving a penalty on debut in a 2-2 draw at Rochdale.

He made seven appearances for the first team last term, appearing in all four of the side’s Checkatrade Trophy matches as well as three times in League One as cover for number one Lawrence Vigouroux.

England, who have twice finished as runners-up in the tournament, kick-off their U19 Euros campaign on Monday when they take on Bulgaria in Group B in Tblisi.
