BATH have signed forward James Phillips from local rivals Bristol for the 2017/18 season.

Phillips arrives at Bath having made nearly 100 appearances for Bristol, scoring 16 tries.

In between his two spells at the Ashton Gate club, the 29-year-old spent four years in the Premiership with Exeter and also had a spell with Championship side London Scottish.

A strong ball carrier, Phillips can play across both the second and back row and will join fellow new recruits Darren Allinson, Freddie Burns, Josh Lewis and Sam Underhill at Bath for pre-season.

Phillips said: “It’s a great opportunity for me to continue my career in the Premiership and I’m really excited to be part of a club, which will be challenging on all fronts this coming season.

“There is great strength and depth across all positions, but I will be looking to put my best foot forward and show what I can bring to the pack.”

Bath director of rugby Todd Blackadder added: “James is an excellent addition to the squad and comes to the club with considerable Premiership experience, which will be invaluable for the new campaign.

“He is a big, powerful forward with a strong carrying game and we look forward to seeing him in full flight for Bath over the next 12 months.”
