WROUGHTON were finally able to wrap up the Wiltshire League title with a 5-0 win at last season’s champions, Trowbridge Town.

Mark Love’s troops clinched the championship in emphatic fashion and still have one league fixture to play, when they visit Wilts Calne Town on Saturday.

Shane Hibbert, two, Dan Cole, James Turner and Glenn Armstrong were all on target for the village side as they moved three points clear of nearest rivals Shrewton United, who have played all of their fixtures.

Hibbert was the man to get things moving when he popped up with an early goal in the first five minutes of the game.

He then bagged his second on the half-hour mark before Dan Cole made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.

The second-half saw Love’s troops produce more of the same when Turner lashed home from long range midway through the half.

Armstrong wrapped up the win and the title with a late strike to complete the scoring.

“We played really well as well so it wasn’t like we got lucky, we dominated against a good Trowbridge side,” said assistant Paul Bowden. “I don’t think they wanted to give up the title on their ground but we put in one of our best performances to turn them over.

“We were a bit nervous before the game, especially when we saw their team sheet. We went out with the right attitude and we could have asked for more.”

The league triumph comes 11 years after Love first claimed the Wiltshire League crown with Wroughton.

Both Love and Bowden are former players and grew up in the village, something which makes their victory even sweeter according to Bowden.

“He won it when some of the younger players were nippers and it is great we have won it 11 years later,” he added.

“All the management team are from Wroughton and played for the club, which makes it extra special for us.

“We have grown up together and known each other since we were 18 and played for Wroughton until we were in our 40s, so it is great we are still involved.”

With one league game left to play, Wroughton have the perfect chance to maintain their momentum as they aim for a league and cup double with victory in the Senior Knockout Cup final with Shrewton United.

The other fixture which took place saw Corsham Reserves suffer a 4-2 home defeat to Ludgershall Sport.
