CONSISTENCY in selection aided Swindon Town’s development side to a second win of the season against Southend United yesterday, according to Ross Embleton.

Swindon’s first team coach named a similar looking side to the one that fell to a 3-2 defeat at their Bristol Rovers counterparts last week.

And despite falling behind to a third-minute strike from Sonny Coutts, Ellis Iandolo’s almost immediate response and Jermaine Hylton’s second-half penalty secured just a second win for Town in the Central League.

“I thought it was a good game of football,” said Embleton.

“Last week, we put a similar team out to what we had today and we spoke about a number of things, albeit that it was a good performance, and that there were common themes across what we do well and what we don’t do well across the club.

“I felt we addressed those in a number of ways. It probably wasn’t as fluid of a performance you would normally see from us but we showed some maturity and learnt from the things we spoke about.

“The goal was a little bit untidy to let in from the set-piece, people didn’t do their jobs and it was disappointing.

“We bounced back quite quickly and that was good.”

At the Webbswood Stadium, James Brophy, who started life at Swindon as a full-back, was tested in an unfamiliar role at the tip of a diamond midfield.

While Embleton admitted it was a bit of a needs must move, he also believes it is a role the 22-year-old can make his own.

“Partly we wanted everybody who was in the team today to get minutes and that led to moving one or two around,” added the Swindon coach.

“At the same time, James’ ability to run with the ball, sometimes, in that position, if he can receive it and turn, he can be devastating in the middle of the pitch rather than wide.

“We wanted to give him that opportunity to see how he would affect the game and I think he enjoyed it.

“That might be something longer term for James, and he’ll have to improve his finishing and assisting for other people.”

Meanwhile, the Wiltshire Cup Final between Swindon Supermarine and Highworth Town will be played on Thursday, April 27, at the County Ground.
