SWINDON Town striker Nicky Ajose has launched a staunch defence of head coach Luke Williams as he remains adamant that the club can get themselves out of trouble.

The 25-year-old was brought back to the club in January from Charlton Athletic, the club he departed the County Ground for last summer, and re-opened his account with a brace in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Coventry City.

It’s Ajose’s goals and his partnership with Jonathan Obika, who got Swindon’s second goal at the Ricoh Arena, that could save Town in their battle against relegation.

And Ajose admitted that he wouldn’t have re-joined on loan if he considered for a moment that they would go down.

“I don’t want a relegation on my CV,” he said. “We’ve got Luke (Williams) who sets up in a way that tries to get the best out of each individual player and I think you have seen that in the last two or three games.

“Even if the results haven’t been there, the performances, especially last week was brilliant, and (Saturday), to come here and score three goals is brilliant.

“Luke’s my guy and he looks after me. I have got the utmost respect for him, he is a tremendous coach and what the fans were shouting last week was a disgrace, I won’t have it.

“I know we’re in a position where we don’t want to be in but it’s certainly not down to Luke and it’s not nice to see, but we’re all behind him anyway.

“(In the post-match huddle), Luke was saying it was a turning point for us.

“We were always confident we were going to stay up and let’s just keep adding to that now really.”

It’s Ajose, last season’s top goal scorer for Town, four games to get off the mark in his third stint but the confident forward never had any doubt it would come, as was disappointed not to walk away with the match ball.

“I think I played really well against Oxford, very well at Bury, a lot better than I was playing last year,” he added.

“Today was ok, I managed to get a couple of chances and I should have scored three, I was devastated about that but I’m happy to get off the mark again.

“I’m not afraid to miss chances, it’s when you’re not getting them that you get frustrated.

“Obviously, it’s a different challenge to the previous two years. We were comfortable last year and the first year we were challenging for the play-offs.

“I embrace it, I am still learning and trying to give back to the team and help and I love playing for Swindon.”
