JORDAN Smith picked up where he had left off on the European Tour with a fine start to the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 tournament in Australia this morning.

Derry Hill's Smith, returning to action after a week's break, carded a four-under-par 68 at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth to lie just outside the top 10 in the inaugural event, which combines stroke play and match play golf.

The Bowood-based 24 year old, already with two top 10 finishes on his maiden season on the European Tour, showed few signs of slowing down as he posted five birdies with just a solitary dropped shot to lie two off the leaders.

The new format will see the field reduced to the top 65 and ties as usual after 36 holes, with a further cut after 54 holes to determine the top 24 players for Sunday's match play stages.

Any ties for 24th place will be decided by a play-off on the 18th hole at Lake Karrinyup, while the top eight qualifiers receive a bye in the first round of the six-hole match play contests.

Matches tied after six holes will also be decided in a play-off using a "shootout" hole which utilises the existing 18th green and a new tee located around 100 yards away.
