HEAD coach Luke Williams is unsure if the departure of Nathan Delfouneso will guarantee further new arrivals at Swindon Town before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month but is sure no stone is being left unturned to find the best deals possible for the club.

Delfouneso was allowed to leave Town on Friday ahead of the weekend clash at home to Peterborough United in League One and immediately signed for Blackpool on a free transfer.

After seeing Town slip to a 1-0 defeat against the Posh, Williams expects experienced heads to be at the top of most supporters’ shopping lists between now and January 31.

Although it is impossible for Williams to say for certain whether Swindon or not will be able to strengthen the squad further as they fight to avoid relegation, he is confident that chairman Lee Power and director of football Tim Sherwood will act if a suitable transfer can be done.

“I don’t know for sure but I trust that work is going on to try to see if there are the right type of players (available) that we can bring into the club and we will see in the coming weeks,” said Williams.

“That (experience) will be the obvious cry from frustrated fans, for sure.

“We will see what is available and what’s possible and if the right player is available with the right terms, then they will be here.”

Former England U21 international striker Delfouneso only joined Town on a one-year deal in the summer but struggled to make an impact at the County Ground.

The 25-year-old ex-Aston Villa striker scored just three times in 24 appearances for the club and had not featured since coming off the bench in the 4-0 loss at Sheffield United on December 10, being an unused substitute in the Town’s six subsequent fixtures.

Williams conceded that low return in front of goal was what ultimately saw Swindon sanction Delfouneso’s departure.

“Nathan gave us everything he could but wasn’t quite able to score the goals we were hoping he would and he was hoping he would. He certainly gave us everything and was a very valued member of the squad,” said Williams.

“At the moment, it’s the right decision for him to go elsewhere to try to play on a more regular basis.

“Obviously he has been away from the pitch for a number of weeks but he is ambitious, he still wants to play and felt like he needed to go and get game time.”
