PETERBROROUGH United manager Grant McCann was pleased to put a ‘freak result’ at Bury behind them as they responded to claim all three points at the County Ground on Saturday.

Having fallen to a humbling 5-1 defeat to a Bury side who had not won in the previous 20 games last weekend, the pressure was on Peterborough to respond.

Swindon Town’s visitors would have been disappointed to have gone in level at half-time having had the clear-cut chances in the first period, with Ryan Tafazolli’s header denied early on by a fine stop from Lawrence Vigouroux before Tom Nichols fired over the bar unmarked in the six-yard-box.

However, McCann’s half-time team talk had the desired effect as Posh were ahead within a minute of the restart when Chris Forrester turned in the box to fire home and his strike was enough to secure a valuable three points.

“We were a bit safe and we probably lacked a little bit of belief, with what happened to us last week,” said McCann.

“I think we played a little bit cautious, I think that is the best word to describe the first half.

“I asked them to trust themselves at half time, ‘start believing yourself a bit’. ‘You are a good team’.

“I said last week, ‘that was a freak result’ and nobody saw it coming.

“They responded brilliantly. I was really, really pleased for the back four and Luke (McGee), especially after the hammering they took last week.”

Peterborough’s victory, their first in their last five outings, lifted them to eighth in the table and just four points off the play-off spots but McCann is not getting ahead of himself.

“I wasn’t too worried second half,” he added.

“When scored I knew; I could sense it all week that they were back in terms of their focus was there.

“We’re not getting carried away with ourselves, it’s a good away performance and we have to move on very quickly.

“I was pleased with the whole team today. The chances we created as well, on another day they would go in.”
